CYA too high - help

started the slam yesterday afternoon. slammed roughly every 2 hours yesterday, so readings were .8, 18, 23, 24, and then it was 24 this morning. The goal is 26. Thoughts?

My concern is that your FC level will be too low for your CYA level. I have come to trust my Taylor-based tests. Having ridden the pool store roller coaster for years, I know how inconsistent and inaccurate their test results are. Hopefully it works out for you. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I tested again this morning and changed my technique a little bit. I put the tube on a light-colored surface so I could see the dot better. My results were close to the pool store, around 66 (they said 65).

I slammed again because I am still at 24 (goal is 26). When might we start seeing some improvement in the pool if we started the slam yesterday afternoon?

Twice backwashing in a day and refilling water , may help reduce cya down to ~50 manageable number, that will help speed up SLAM process.

Take a picture every day, same time same spot. Compare the pictures. That is the best way to see improvement.

I test indoors. I place it on a light counter so I can see the dot at the bottom of the tube. They I add the water while staring at the dot the whole time.

The test is a turbidity test and is dependent on light. Very roughly speaking, direct overhead sunlight is around 100,000 lux, strong indirect light (i.e. shaded from the sun) is around 10,000 lux, an overcast sky is around 1000-5000 lux but varies on how overcast (which is why a bright white cloud overcast is still OK), indoors is usually < 1000 even in a bright kitchen (more typically 500 lux).

CYA will always show low in indoor light, because there isn't enough light bouncing off the turbid material in the test.

Test outdoors, sun at your back. Fill to the first line, then hold at your waste in the shadow of your body. GLANCE down the tube. Don't stare, short glance. If you can see the dot, fill to the next line. etc. When you get to a line where the dot is obscured (see below), take the number on that line and add 10. That is your CYA.

I can't find my old thread, so I'll just start a new one.

This is Day 6 of the SLAM. The water is definitely getting bluer. However, it is still very murky.

The sand in our filter was only replaced a few weeks ago, and hubby says he has backwashed twice since we started the SLAM. (hubby and brother-in-law did the replacing, which neither has done before, and neither would be considered a "handyman" lol)

Would you say our filter is working well? Or not?

Can't comment on if the filter is working well or not.

Backwash, note clean pressure. When pressure rises 25%, backwash again.
