Hello all,

Water is cloudy blue for the past week after having an algae bloom. Filter and pump almost running 24/7.

Here is the current results using taylor k-2006 at june 21 4 pm.

Cc 0.8
FC 8.4
Ph 7.2
Ta 120
Ch 200
Cya 34

I used fas-dpd method for free and combined chlorine.

Below are the previous results the pool store gave me before while I was waiting for my taylor kit June 21 9 am.

total chlorine 18
free chlorine 18
Ph 8.3
Ta 119
Ch 180
Cya 28

I added 32 oz of muriatic acid to get to the current results.

I have a couple questions.

1. Is it safe to swim chemical wise? Cant see the bottom on 4 feel pool.
2. Why is it cloudy blue and what steps should I take next?

Thank you.

If you cannot see the bottom, it is not safe to swim.

Your CYA is 40. Always round up to next 10.

Lower your pH in .4 increments. Use muriatic acid. Test after 30 minutes, lower again by .4, repeat until you get to 7.4.

Then follow the SLAM process to clear your pool. Link-->SLAM Process

Proof it works. Link-->How Clear is TFP Clear?

Since you have a proper test kit, do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test. This will confirm if there is algae is present.
Your FC level is good for the level of CYA - see FC/CYA Levels
Prepare to do a SLAM Process
Go purchase additional LC to raise FC quickly.

You should round up the CYA reading to the next highest decade - i.e. 40

EDIT - forgot to add - it is not safe to swim if you cannot see the bottom.

Ignore all previous tests from the pool store. Throw them away. Never look at them again. Use your Taylor kit. Trust it.

I would not swim in the pool until you can be assured there is no algae remaining in the pool.
Do an OCLT (overnight chlorine loss test).
Depending on the results, you may need to SALM. Current CC of .8 with cloudy water indicates a possible algae problem.

I will start the SLAM process right away since I had bought 6 gallons just in case today.

going to test the PH make sure stays at 7.2 or near.

At 40 cya, 7500 gallon pool, pool math recommends 16 FC for SLAM target level which is around 73 oz and double that is 140 which is a gallon and little bit more.

The SLAM process process sais to
  • Use our PoolMath calculator to determine how much liquid chlorine you need to add to raise your FC from zero to SLAM level. Then, purchase DOUBLE that amount.
Is it from 0 or from what it's currently at, 8.4?

You are confusing pH and FC.

Test pH. Lower in .4 increments, wait 30 minutes, retest, readd enough muriatic to lower another .4 until you get to 7.4. Then, during slam, ignore pH...only test FC.

Then, test FC. Add enough liquid chlorine to get to target FC...16. The recommendation is on PURCHASING enough FC to start the slam. Add enough to get from your current FC to target.

Wait a couple hours, test FC and add enough to get to 16 again. Rinse and repeat until you meet all three SLAM exit criteria.

Good morning , hope yall have a good weekend and I appreciate all the help I can get. Have family over next weekend hopefully its safe to swim by then. Fingers crossed. 🤞

Tested this morning and
FC at 10.6
CC at 0.6.
Cya at 45

Going to add LC to new target slam level of 20. My cya raised from last night. I hope that's right.

Your CYA is 50. Always round up to the next 10. Your SLAM target is 20.

For FC testing, use 10mL of sample water. Every drop is .5FC. Using 25mL you will use up reagent. 10mL is fine and accurate enough for SLAM and everyday testing.

Daily update.

At 9 a.m. was 10 FC so added 90oz to get to 20
At 12 pm was 13 FC so added 100oz . A little extra since I wasnt going to be home.
At 9pm was at 8 FC so Added a whole gallon for overnight.

Water still cloudy blue, but continuing slam.

Good Work. Continue to monitor every 4 hrs or so as feasible.
Are you brushing the sides and bottom?
How is filter doing?

The filter is doing okay by the looks of it. Its at a steady 9 psi for the past week, that's its usual working psi. I will be doing a full brushing today , last maintenance was 2 days ago and it was full brushing and vacuuming.

Will be checking water chemistry soon and adding more LC per SLAM.

Do you use the same cya reading, taken at the beginning of the process, throughout SLAM? I only ask because I may have to get more of the cyanuric reagents for the Taylor kit. It uses a big owe squirt in that little bottle.

Happy Sunday.

Use the CYA that you tested before you started SLAM. Unless you have specifically added CYA there is no reason to retest.

Sunday update:

at 9am, 12 pm, and just now 6 pm had FC of 12 approx. Each time adding to SLAM level. I may need to go buy more gallons of this stuff.

pool still looks the same. Were getting really high heat during the day so is it recommended to increase liquid chlorine to offset that? Otherwise slamming away.

I have a sand filter so that may be why clearing the slam process takes a bit longer. That's my guess.

It is best to take a photo every day at the approximately the same time. It is easier to see day to day changes.
Continue to keep SLAM level FC, there is no reason to exceed that level of FC.
