Updated- New owner ongoing questions

I'm back with another question!

Chemical wise things have been going great, however I've noticed that my white fiberglass steps have started to yellow at the water line and below, which seems odd to me seeing as they're sitting in chlorinated water. I tried scrubbing them with a magic eraser, but it didn't seem to make much of a difference that I could tell. Is there something I can use to remove this yellowing? What is it that's building up there?

We've had that ongoing caterpillar frass problem, so I know some organic matter has gotten in the water over the last few weeks, and that the frass stains stuff outside the pool pretty badly, not sure if this would be concentrated enough in the pool to do any sort of staining though. I do know there is minor rust on our pool light (builder says they'll fix it, but it seems obvious they screwed up and the screws they used are not stainless because most of them are starting to rust) so maybe it's possibly from that, though the rust spots are only nickel sized.

Tell me there is a way to whiten the steps and that 1 month after getting a new pool I'm not resigned to stained fiberglass? Thanks for following along!

Sounds like the onset of iron staining because otherwise it would clean off relatively easy.

Get some vitamin C tabs and crush the up in a sock. If it comes clean with some light scrubbing, it's likely iron.

Thanks for this- By Vitamin C tabs we mean like the pills you take for human consumption, right?

Yup. Walgreens or such might have rolls of them if you happen to be passing one before Amazon can make it to you.

Even a little rust can cause staining in random places! You certainly want anything rusty out of the pool asap.
Throw a handful of vit c pills in a sock & beat with a hammer 🔨 /rolling pin - whatever u got - tie it up & it will get squishy in the water. If its iron stains it wipes them away easily. Little to No scrubbing. Its a chemical change really.

I found a powdered version on Amazon for delivery tomorrow so I'll give it a try when that gets here, I was thinking it was from the rust- but honestly I don't want to mess with the light when it's still the builder who should be fixing it. There's barely been water in the pool 6 weeks, this shouldn't be happening at all.
