Chlorine
Liquid Chlorine
Hello,

I noticed 2 days ago that I didn't have any CYA ( fresh water pool still looked really nice) I went ahead and added some and now I have a CYA of 65. I have been trying to get a good reading of FC but when I added in the agent the water never turns pink. I am assuming I have no chlorine. I added in 1 jug of liquid chlorine. Tested 8 hours later still no reading. I added another jug and this morning I tested still nothing. Here is the numbers I pulled from Taylor K-2006

CYA - 65
TA - 120
PH - 7.8

Thoughts? I thought about adding another jug but I am not sure if there is something else going on? No algae from what I can see. I live in San Antonio, TX if that helps and temperatures have been really hot lately.

Thanks,
-jb

I would try adding another gallon or two of chlorine with your pump running, and test after 20 mins or so and see how that turns out. It should show some chlorine and will determine whether the chemicals you are using for testing are good. If that shows chlorine, then you have something consuming your FC. The next step would be an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test. It's safe to swim at your pool party up to SLAM FC levels.

That is about as fresh as liquid chlorine gets. As long as you can verify your testing supplies are providing accurate results as discussed above, I would roll right into a SLAM. It might take a lot of chlorine at first and will require frequent testing, but it will only get worse if nothing is done.

HI Everyone, Just wanted to follow up since we are done with our pool party. On Monday I did put in 2 jugs of chlorine which after 1 hour I went to go and test and it jump to 9ppm. On Tuesday we had it at 7-8ppm This morning of course we had 0 but that was after a ton of kids in the pool which I kinda expected. I went ahead and dumped 1 jug of chlorine and will go out in test in 30 minutes.

Keep that chlorine up at all times or you risk an algae outbreak.
After a party such as you had, go ahead and add chlorine immediately after. In fact, raising the FC level a few points about your norm in advance of a party (esp if there will be kids you know don't want to get out to pee) will help cover the losses you know will happen.
