Blue green stains

That might work, but there are risks with any treatment.

Probably worth a try.

Note that the process might not work and it might cause more problems.

Are there any options to clean it if I drain it first?

I ordered the stain ID kit to try and confirm what it is.

I would turn off the pump and remove the pump lid to let everything drain.

The copper in the heater is probably damaged and the Jack’s #2 dissolves copper, which is why it removes copper stains, but it can dissolve more copper from the heater if the product (Sulfamic acid) gets in the heater.

The heater might begin to leak at some point if the copper is damaged badly enough.

Note that the product might not work and it might cause more problems.

Just got my stain ID kit and it is indeed copper. I know that jacks requires a heater bypass, but does the zero alkalinity test also require this? I don't have a bypass but am reaching out to my builder to get it installed.

You don't need a bypass if you drain the system during treatment.

After treatment, do a drain and refill to get rid of the copper and chemicals.

Here is a different thread with the same issue.

They opted for an acid wash and it came out well.

However, I would avoid an acid wash because it can make the surface excessively rough.

OMG, we are very happy campers! It's like 85% better. Look at these before and after. I can't believe the pool was actually WHITE!

Is there a thread or link with specific instructions? Is simply turning off the pump during treatment enough to protect the heater copper core? Or do I simultaneously drain while using jack's #2?

This is my best estimate of what to do, but I am not recommending anything.

I would drain the equipment and protect any metal in the pool like lights or handrails.

Then, add the product.

Brush well and give it several hours.

If it works, drain and refill.

If it is not 100% clean, drop the TA (Total Alkalinity) to zero.

Brush well and give it several hours.

Drain and evaluate the surface.

If you want to acid wash, do it at this time if there are any stains left.

Maybe sand the surface to smooth it out if you feel like it will help.

Refill the pool.

I am not telling you that I know that this will work or that it is safe to do.

The process has risks and it might not work and it might make things worse.

Any metal in the pool can be damaged by the treatment like lights, light niches, handrails etc.

The pool can potentially float if drained, so get local professional advice before draining.
