New roof tips?

Make sure you notify your insurance company when the roof is replaced. Here in FL it will give you huge savings. Any roof over 7yrs old will not receive the best rates here.

Also, I own a commercial building that had a tile roof. You think that they have 50 yr warranty but at about 25 years old, my insurance company refused to insure the building due to the age of roof. I thought that was complete BS but had no coice but I went back with a dimensional shingle at 1/4 the cost of tile. It comes with a 20 yr warranty, agreeable by the insurance company providing I have an inspection at year 10. It was a no brainer for me.

You should probably notify them, but that is more of a Florida thing. Insurance companies are either dropping customer or charging a huge premium to anyone with a roof over 20 years old. Even these 25 and 50 year certified roofs.

, but that is more of a Florida thing.
That's what I'm thinking with 99.95% less hurricanes in LA. (Google has conflicting info. Either the 1858 storm was a hurricane, or they've never had a hurricane)

*edit. It was called the San Diego Hurricane, but wasn't a hurricane. So 100% less hurricanes in CA.

Still though. It never hurts to try for a discount.

Does anyone have a tip or a link for how I might check out a business license and any complaints about companies? I think a while back @JamesW had posted a link to a resource in discussion about something else, but I can’t locate it.
In my search for a roofing company, I’d like to go off something more than Yelp🙂

Around here, many of the roofing companies will put signs in the front yard of the house they are working on. I have found, that as long as you do it in daylight hours, many people like to talk about the work they have done on their house. In other words, go knock on the door at like 2 PM on a Saturday, not 9 PM on a Tuesday. Just say, "I saw you had your roof redone, and I am looking for a contractor, was your any good? " I am on a pretty busy road, and often out in my driveway or yard, I have had people ask about my paving contractor and my house painter.

Also take a look on social media (especially Facebook) and see if there is a local group for your area (Parents group, homeowner group, whatever they call it). They are normally a great place to get reviews and recommendations.

Two really great ideas for finding a contractor! Around here it's called Nextdoor:

Yup those are great suggestions. I actually just asked a neighbor yesterday while admiring his roof and he said he’d dig up his paperwork. 🙂 it’s preferable for me to get a review from a person who has done it before. And you’re right, I should check FB and Nextdoor. Thanks again everyone. You’ve all been super kind with suggestions and tips!

Around here Nextdoor seems to be populated with people who like to complain about "kids today" and any sort of construction that may be going on. Oh, and anytime they spot any living animal - birds, fox, coyote, bears, etc.

Yah, with mine it's mostly complaints about dogs pooping on lawns. OK, well, that's mostly me. But I have seen some contractor referrals once in a while, too.

Reread my post. Just to be clear, it's mostly me complaining on Nextdoor, not mostly me pooping on lawns! But I swear, if they don't stop, I'm going to follow them home and see how they like it! And I don't own a dog!!
