Kihei Maui

I did the bike trip with my wife, (talked her into it), when it was over I thought she wanted a divorce .
I was in front flying down, she was in the rear with breaks on the whole way
It was a great ride
Yes I saw several people crash on that when we were driving down in our car. Nasty accidents because people don't realize how fast you can be going down that road.

We stayed in a time share there last year end of February/beginning of March. We loved it! It was our first time to Hawaii. We were right across from an awesome beach. My BIL used to live there and was telling us these beaches to go to and none of them compared to the one across the street we could walk to. The waves were very gentle so good for swimming. There was a sea turtle "resting" on the beach for a couple of days. That was really cool to see. We could also see whales jumping from that beach. It was amazing!

We loved the road to Hana. My BIL got an app that played a speil and told what everything was and gave fun information about Hawaii. Definitely worth the less than $10 it cost. We were lucky that it wasn't busy when we went. It was so fun to see the black sand and red sand beaches along it.

Go to Lahaina and get Hula pie. It's delicious 😋.

There was a really good restaurant near our resort. It was called Moose Mcgillicuddy's. One of the best French dip sandwiches I've ever had. It was my husband's birthday and the dessert they gave him was heavenly 🤤.

The Flatbread Company in Pa'ia was delicious. We ate there on our way home from the Road to Hana.

Most of our trips revolve around food 😂. If you can't eat yummy food, what's the point 🤷🏻‍♀️.
Have fun 🌊🌺!!

Casey, I hope you are looking forward to your Maui trip after all you have gone through this year.

Here is my guide to my Maui favorites. Happy to discuss any of them more.

Leave yourself time to chill and enjoy the beaches and ocean.

  • Maui
    • Restaurants
      • Monkey Pod – Wailea casual
      • Paia Fish Market – Kihei – Best value in seafood in picnic setting
      • Merrimans – Kapalua – worth the drive - Kapalua, Maui - Merriman's Hawaii Restaurant
      • Nylos – Paia – wildly expensive and worth the experience
      • Morimoto – Wailea – great sushi with beach views
      • Hali’imaile General Store – Up country
      • Gannons – Wailea - – sunset views over dinner
      • Mamas Fish House - Explore Paia and that side of the island while dining at Mamas. Great for a good meal if you have a late flight home.
    • Sea

      • Beach & Snorkeling –

      • Explore the up country – Drive up the Haleakala Highway and make a left towards Hai’imale. You can stop at the Hai’imale General store for a nice meal. Continue to Baldwin Road where you turn left down the mountain towards Paia. Explore Paia and you can find the Paia Fish House if you are hungry. At the end of Baldwin Road you can turn right and head down the Hana Highway towards Mamas Fish House and Hookpaia Neach Park to watch the surfers. Or turn left and head back towards Kahului =, Kihei and Wailea.
      • Kihei – Kaanapali - Lahaina - Kapalua – Take S. Kihei Road towards N. Kihei Rd (310) – you will pass the Kealia Coastal Boardwalk which is a nice less them 2 mile nature trail – follow the signs towards Ma’alaea and at the end of 310 turn left onto Honoapilani Highway (30). This will take you past Lahaina, Kaanapali, and into Kapalua. Many places to explore along that drive.

6 more days! One more week of biddin!!! Im packed n ready to go!

I assume you are renting a car. There is a Costco right next to the airport if you want to get anything. Prices are much better at Costco then the local Kihei markets.

We are renting a 4wd jeep to get anywhere on the island.

I also got my lil love handles off before going out! 20221019_173514.jpg

We visited Maui as part of a cruise in 2006. We were there for a very limited time, so only got to do a few things.

I’m surprised no one has yet mentioned Iao Valley State Park. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

We also went to the top of the Haleakalā volcano and rode bicycles back down (almost no peddling required, lol). We didn’t do the sunrise tour, but wish we had. If you visit the volcano, bring warm layered clothing as it can get really cold up there! 🥶. When we went it was in the 30s at the top of the volcano and 80 at the bottom.

We also really enjoyed the Road to Hana. Don’t rush, just take your time and enjoy.

I loved the downhill no-pedaling bike ride except for one or two things. The bike renter doesn't supply gloves. Early in the day, my hands froze solid. BYOG. If you're a serious rider, bring your own helmet, too, or suffer with one of their poorly fitting ones. It's still fun in any case.

Iao is temporarily closed, they are refurbishing it. We are actually leaving for Maui on Sunday, to Kaanapali. Were thinking about Iao until we figured out it was closed.

I don't get down to Kihei area very much, we stay up in Kaanapali so I can't give recommendations down there. But Maui is beautiful, you'll have a great time.

I think Haleakala is worth the drive, but as Saturn said its cold at the time, bring long pants and jacket for up there.

I'd plan for a dinner in Lahaina. And then allow time to walk on Front Street after dinner. Touristy, but still fun.

Do something in a boat, like a snorkeling cruise. Its early for whales, but you have a decent chance of running into some dolphins.

You didn't say if you're bringing kids? I'm assuming little angel in the pic is yours. When our girls were little, we spent a lot of time just playing on the beach and going to the pool. And they liked the aquarium, which is pretty close to Kihei.
When they got a little bigger, parasailing and horseback riding was fun.

No kids. The little one is my granddaughter.

Grandma? Never would have guessed.

More Maui thoughts.
Sunrise at Haleakala is supposed to be really nice, they have tours to go see it. We never felt like waking up that early. Coming from the east coast, especially at the start of your vacation, I expect it would be easier to wake up really early to go see it.
We tend to keep early hours when we go, I love to go to the beach early in the morning. Much less crowded and very relaxing.

Some things you need to make reservations way in advance, Momma's Fishhouse its way late to make a reservation, unless you get lucky and someone cancels. But openings go fast.

Molokini is supposed to be good for a snorkeling cruise, but I've never been. We stay up in Kaanapali, so leave from Lahaina harbor, and we've gone to Lanai. I think the boats also leave from Maalaea, which is close to you.
We prefer to do boat/ocean activities in the morning when the water is calmer. It can get windy and choppy in the afternoons.

I'd read reviews, and find a good luau around Kihei. The bigger hotels have them. In Lahaina, we like the Old Lahaina Luau, but that's another place you need to make reservations months in advance.

Try to go to Black Rock Beach. It’s a beautiful beach with calm water, LOTS of sea turtles that can be observed in waist deep water, and a great jump (or dive if you’re so inclined) off of Black Rock!

Have a wonderful trip!
