And now the moment you all have been waiting for. Well at least @Orion7319 and @Newdude have been waiting for…..

BOT RACES!!!!

I put both on my steps and started them up. Which one reached the other side of the pool first?

Taking all bets…..
Which one?!

I'll take Ariel as a nod to when my daughters were not doorslamhormoneasauruses.

The lil Mermaid gonna clean up.

Still taking bets.

So far we have 2:1 on Betta from @DanF

@Orion7319 and @Newdude the betting windows are closing soon.
I don’t know I don’t know! I know that between the original beta and the beta 2 they gave the beta 2 bigger props (prop pitch) and the motor spins slower… it still goes the same speed… so it’s a complete guess! I think that perhaps the the beta because it uses traditional props… the aerial uses paddle wheels correct? Ok then beta is my bet…

EDIT: you got your pump off right? Not a fair completion if one or the other is either fighting with or riding against a current.

Ding, ding, ding. Betting is now closed.
Pump was not off, but pool was in Spa mode as my wife was glaring at me to get this done so she could go into the spa. (83 degrees is too cold for her, but thats another thread).

Sooooo.

Ariel has sophisticated launch control and is quicker off the mark. And the winner is…..

Betta by about 16 lengths.

Stay tuned for Bot wars….

Ok, on to some more serious stuff.

After a few hours of running both I pull both out of the pool and removed their collection baskets. Its hard to be scientific but it looks like the betta collected more than the Ariel. I attribute this to a few reasons.

The Betta basket seems like a finer mesh. I think it is plastic based but still hard to tell. The Ariel has a steel mesh. Both a very fine and capture most debris.

The Betta maneuvers corners better. Ariel will get stuck in a corner for a while until she figure out how to free herself. Betta just does a quick turn and is out. This allows Betta to cover more surface area. This is still preliminary and I will capture more data about this from the time lapse I plan on doing. This is an important test/feature for me as my pool has 12 corners.

Wake: Both units produce a front end wake but the Betta’s seem to be less. Again not scientific yet, but will be measured later.

On the overnight test. I checked both robots at 10:30 and both were going. This morning, Ariel was idle and Betta was still going strong, despite not having as much charge time in the pool as Ariel.

Clear advantage on run time for the Betta.

Ariel has blue running LED while Betta has green. I prefer the blue, but that is just an esthetic thing.

Kato, do you mind a little constructive criticism? I would have found your thread more interesting, as maybe others in the future will, if I knew what either an Ariel or a Betta was, and what they do. Never heard of either. Perhaps something about that in post #1? Your video in post #2 doesn't show up, just a blank, white area. And one of my personal pet peeves is video taken in portrait orientation (with the big black bars on each side). So, you know, like 90% of the video on the internet!! Shoot your video holding your phone in landscape (wide, not tall) and it will show more of what's going on, and more of your beautiful pool. I hope this is helpful, but either way I suspect this comparison will be valuable to many in coming weeks/months/years. Good job.

I have to concur with Dirk. I skipped the whole thread because the title and opening comments gave me no clue what it was about.

Dirk's comment caused me to re-visit it and I am glad I did!

I hate criticism. It makes me feel bad. But when you are right, you are right...

I have updated the title of the thread to indicate we are testing Solar Skimmers. Fixed the YouTube video on the first post (dont use the YouTube insert on the menu bar, just post a link calling @Leebo). And re watched the bot races, and now of course that video is making me crazy. I promise the next race will be more professionally shot, and make sure you stay tuned for bot wars….

I did preface that I am new to this whole YouTube and video thing. The first video I post was literally the first video I have ever posted of anything. But I am getting better at this, I now have 2 subscribers and only one of them is my wife!!!

So, keep the criticism and advice coming. I aim to please.
