New Liner for Saltwater Pool

You can let it sit, rub it, or place a few in a thin sock or nylon (crushed) and rub that. Just about any way should work for this purpose. Even the exposed step, just pour some water on it and rub the tablet. If it's iron staining, you'll know quite quickly.

Ok you’re so helpful! So relieved to have some help! I may have many questions after this new liner is out in and what to do chemical wise from there if that’s ok?

So what do we decide to do if it is iron and the vitamin c takes the stains off the steps? At least the steps will be white but will they turn again?

That depends on the extent of staining. Sometimes spot treatments and proper control of water chemistry helps. Other times it requires more treatment, but we'll cross that bridge after you can do the step test with Vitamin C.

Another question. Check this pic out. This is the current liner as of last year. Any clue why the bottom looks like this? It was like this when we moved here. Apparently it was like this for years before we moved here as well According to the prior owners. The liner is 10 years old. Previous owner told me it was him and a buddy of his that put this liner in not a professional company. So the pool has had two liners in its life and with us fixing to replace this one will be the third.

Of course. Lots of folks here ready to help. IF you have questions, we have plenty of answers. :)
Hey Texas splash. The new liner is finally in and I have so far added 7 bags of salt. Went to get a water test yesterday and was told I was at 1154 on the salt a 0.9 on the chlorine which is very low. How much liquid chlorine do I need to put in this pool to bring the chlorine up? Also going to get more bags of salt today, I believe we will need 10 more bags but I won’t add that all at once.

Good morning. The amount of chlorine is dependent on your current CYA (stabilizer) level as noted on the FC/CYA Levels. Did you ever get a TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C test kit? We really need to see a full set of test results from one of those to properly answer and guide you. Anything else is guesswork. No wasted effort, time, or money here at TFP. :)

Sorry I don’t have the kit yet. I have only been up to the pool store to get it tested so far.

Understand. Just keep in mind you may not receive much guidance at this point without one. If we guide you on pool store testing, I can almost guarantee that the chemistry will be off. But here are a few basics to help you get started since you have a new fill of water:
- New water has no CYA. If you haven't added any, be sure to add about 60-70 ppm worth of stabilizer (sock method). That is required to help your SWG work more effectively. Do not let stabilizer sit on the new liner.
- Until the salt cell is operating properly, add about 3 ppm of liquid chlorine per day. Continue to monitor the FC as best as you can, but don't let it fall below 3 ppm.
- Keep the pH in the 7.2 - 7.8 range

That's some VERY basic starting points, but beyond that, you'll want one of those test kits. You should also have a Taylor K-1766 salt test kit to validate the salt levels. Hope that helps.

Understood. Now for CYA. I have chlorine tablets. Can these just be placed in the skimmer to raise the CYA?
