Coming chlorine shortage? - It is Here!

I'm feeling even better about the SWG I had installed. If LC gets hard to get, I might have to get a SWG for the hot tub too. The only reason I haven't is there's not a convenient outlet to plug it in to and I don't feel like running new wiring under my deck.

I have 16 gallons of 12.5 LC on hand right now. Since my CH is low I just ordered 24lbs of cal-hypo; that will be my emergency reserve in case LC becomes hard to find mid-summer when my supply dwindles.

Well Crud. The Cal-hypo 68% 1 lb packs I just bought last Friday, went from $65 to $75 overnight.
I found the brand you mentioned for $62 at Doheny. Though $10 shipping if you spend under 100. I bought a pool float my wife wanted to hit the free shipping threshold.

A funny aside - their website has a banner at the top stating they are “out of chlorine”. Because, you know, “shock” isn’t the same as chlorine and they only have some shock in stock.

Western New York here. Typcially I go threw 3-4 gallons of LC per week. Every spring I stock up on cheap LC at Ollie's.
Stopped by Ollies, Walmart, Lowes today... zero chlorine in any form. Shelves looked like the toliet paper shelves from March 2020.

I'm really not sure how i'm going to get and keep my pool open this year.

This is essentially frenzy-buying that is driving up the prices and lowering stocks. It’s just like toilet paper last year - it’s a self-perpetuating myth. One plant fire in Louisiana back in August of 2020 is NOT going to cause shortages. What will ?? Hyping the nonsense and panic buying. The real shortages are caused by the fact there are thousands of new pools built over the normal annual build levels AND there is shortage of long haul truck drivers to move products around efficiently. You’re essentially seeing market capitalism at work - too much demand chasing a stagnant supply causing prices to jump.

TFP needs to make sure that we are being a solution for pool owners and not part of the problem. Because every pool business out there is going to use this fake-news panic to make a fast dollar on unwitting consumers.

Y’all just need to give up and move to Florida. Leslies has 10.5% for $8.88 for 5 gallons. I have a SWG, but like to keep LC for cleaning projects. I might have to spill some just for fun. Maybe I can light a cigar with LC.

Have you guys seen this stuff at HD yet ? They have it on full display at all mine and it sure looks like it’s amazing stuff all ‘specially formulated’. I forget now exactly but according to the bottle it was 6-ish % bleach. But it was ‘proprietarally blended’ with trade secrets of course. :ROFLMAO:
$22.50 for 2.5 gallons. Ouuuuuuuuuch

Wouldn't you be better off with the 73% Calcium Hypochlorite version?

If you must use Cal-Hypo, I have found this packaging to be easier to handle, easier to measure, easier to work with, and safer to store, although not the cheapest. Maybe you can order from JJ Chemical directly?

I guess it's like with toilet paper.

Once people start believing that there will be a shortage, they will do everything thing in their power to ensure that there really will be a shortage.

Doesn't matter that it's actually only dry chlorine that's affected, people will make sure that there will be no liquid chlorine in shops as well.

Next year, those that were storing this year's production of liquid chlorine in their garages, will then sell their unopened bottles as salt water on eBay to SWG-owners who will need to top up their salt levels after a fairly relaxed and uneventful year.

Before listing them on eBay, they will start rumours that the world is going to run out of salt to inflate salt prices.

This will be remembered in history as the "Chlorine Wars" and turned into a triple movie trilogy by Disney.

There are lots of things allegedly in short supply.

Everything from computer chips to lumber are being reported as being in limited supply.

Some reports are legitimate and some are probably fabricated.

Some shortages are due to irrational behavior and some are due to other factors.

They already did this with the pool staining controversy.. they told everyone it was iron... and it turned into a triple movie trilogy. ... see I don't even need to say the name.

Price dependent. At the time it was $62 for 68%, $90 for 73%. That slightly higher concentration didn’t justify the price differential.
