What is the cost of a Gallon of LC in your area? 128 oz 10%LC = 18 oz by weight, from pool math (73%). People are quoting $3.99-$5 per Gallon of 10%. The Best I could find last year was $9.99 for 3 gallons 10% LC at Home Depot. If you buy 4 packages, Home Depot would drop it to $8.99. Correcting for 68% Cal-hypo, 19.3 oz of Cal Hypo (68%) runs about $3.27.
This year, Home Depot is selling 10%LC in a 4 gallon pack for $15.98.
Yes, I can drive 27 miles to go buy $2/gallon (provide my own container) LC in Spring TX. In my Truck, @12mpg, 54 miles = $11.25, not to mention wear and tear on the truck and an hour of my time (@$0.57.5/mile, it is $31). To keep it to $3/gallon, I need to buy more than 12 gallons. OK, no issue. But they are only open 3 days a week from 8AM to Noon.
Cal-Hypo delivered to my house, 24 lbs for $65. $65 could get me 16 gallons at home depot. Or about 30 gallons from NAPCO, if I want to drive an hour during working hours.

Can I ask where you order cal hypo from so cheap? My CH is low and I’d like to have some on hand, but I always find it for like $4/lb which is a poor value compared to the 12.5% LC I can get for <$4

I have had good luck in the past finding “cleaning bleach” @ walmart & dollar general etc. but since the covid its all lemon flavored

It's the other way around. Cal hypo is over $6 for under a pound of 63%.

I said locally. And I can't get it for $65, even on Amazon. Also, Amazon quantities are too much for my pool and season length (and storage capacity).

I was thinking the same thing, I just put 7k into tile and plaster because it was pretty bad. Exactly. ‘Not recovering the cost’ doesn’t do it justice if your house flies off the market and you get your full asking price, possibly even more.
Especially with pools. Ones that need XXXX amount of work will be something that the buyers will probably address and ask for a credit.

OK. Now it's real. Week before last, I bought five gallons of Walmart pool chlorine. The shelves were full as far as the eye could see. Today, I thought I made a wrong turn and was at the toilet paper aisle last June. Empty. Called Leslie's. None in stock. We have trouble, my friend, right here in River City. It starts with P and that stands for Pool. [credit to Meridith Willson and "The Music Man."] Just called for a quote on an IC40 installed. Today no chlorine, tomorrow no chlorine generators.

Mdragger, you have just demonstrated the psychology of inflation. I lived through it in the 1970's. You bought the house you couldn't afford, because inflation in your wages would make the payments affordable next year. You bought major items today, because they would cost more tomorrow. The psychology of inflation drove prices as much as the excess government spending (remember we had the space race, Vietnam war with 500,000 troops in Vietnam at one point, the start of Medicare, and the beginning of the Great Society). Once inflation shows its ugly head, the consumer takes over and makes it worse. The Fed tried to stop it with high interest rates. That just stopped growth and a new term was coined: stagflation. From 1970 to 1980 the CPI increased 100% while the DJIA increased 3.5%. What will happen this time? I wonder, because now I have retirement savings at risk. In any case, I'm getting quotes (again) for a SWCG install. I can deal with increasing prices for a while, but I cannot have algae!I told my husband that we better buy the things we want now & hold on to them because they will cost double before long w/ inflation. Things like vehicles, equipment etc. but we will still have the same income. The groceries increased soon after the pandemic began. I haven’t noticed it decreasing like i hoped, really just that supply has gotten better. My parents used to joke that when we got old we would need a shopping cart full of $$ to go to the grocery store. They apparently weren’t wrong.All the increases have me really hoping that swg cell prices don’t double before i can upgrade. Fingers crossed

Yes...every article in this thread has mentioned the fire.I have heard that the destruction by fire of a major chlorine factory in Lousiana is going to cause a catastrophic chlorine shortage this season. Does anyone know anything about this? Perhaps this might be the year to invest in an SWG.

Yep, probably because of the incessant reporting of an impending shortage. I saw a neighbor unloading what looked like about 10 five gallon buckets of tabs. If it wasn't going to happen, all the news has made sure that it will come to pass.

With all we have been through, I am thrilled that this is the biggest pot the media has to stir right now.
So far, there's been plenty of chlorine in my area. This weekend, two different walmarts had dozens of gallon jugs. Lowes had 2 pallets full. I agree that the media is helping create the shortage. Inducing panic is what the media does best. Same reason people bought hundreds of rolls of toilet paper last year.
Just remember that you might find LC at farm stores, cleaning supply warehouses, dollar general, ect.
Just sold my tablets and dichlor this morning with more craigslist responses than expected. Prior to this I was thinking about trying to take them to the hazardous waste drop off until CNBC made the value for them go up.
