Today's YouTube Video: What is the ideal pH for my pool, and will it affect my chlorine?

Did I miss this somewhere on this site? This video says that pH can be acceptable up to 7.8 in the presence of CYA. Has this been explicitly stated somewhere on this site or is it a revised guideline item?
Somehow I never saw this on this site and have been adding acid to keep it down in the 7.4 to 7.6 range. This then causes the TA to drop so I have also been adding baking soda.
If I were to follow the advice in the video, I would be reducing my pool maintenance a lot, i.e. far less frequent additions of acid and baking soda. That sounds great.

This has been around for years, but until we’ve looked at the amount of users who were actively trying to maintain a low pH we’ve never really seen it as a big deal. This last year however we’ve bumped the “ideal” levels up to try to get more users to feel safe that a higher pH isn’t an issue, in fact, it has some benefits.

The idea that pH affects the “strength” of chlorine is true. It’s huge in indoor public pools where CYA isn’t allowed due to health regulations. That said, add CYA and you’re good. There is some drop in “strength” but simply not that much.

Let your pH drift up some, don’t fight it so much.

Thank you for asking that question - my pool loves to sit at a pH of 7.8. Adding acid will keep it at 7.4-7.6 for a week or so, then it drifts and stays at 7.8. Now I feel more comfortable watching it closely there.

Now keep in mind, there are instances when having a low pH level is a positive. Instances like attempting to keep CSI in check, start of a SLAM, or if your pH naturally wants to stay low all are positive reasons to rock a low pH.

Maintaining a low pH simply because the chlorine works better, that’s not always a good reason.
