Large Cantilever Umbrella

I had a couple that were similar, just not that exact brand. I found that you still had to be careful to retract it when not in use or on a windy day. The base will never keep it stable against a strong wind. For the ones I bought, the fabric lasted about two season before it got dry-rot. Now is just use stationary umbrellas that I place in a homemade stand I created.

We have one (that I found second hand for a GREAT price). We live in a wind tunnel, pretty much, and it's been great. We do have one of the big ones (13') with the extended weight base. We don't leave it open when we aren't outside - but so far, it's been great! I love the functionality and how many ways it can be rotated and moved.

Thanks! I know winds can come and go throughout the day here in Texas, but I do plan on being proactive and do my best at keeping them closed at night and pool down times. I actually keep the ones we already have stored in the garage during the off season. May do the same for these or just purchase the covers for them. So how did you like the "angle" feature on it? Did it stay stable at all angles other than fully retracted?

The concept is nice, and there certainly are more options to provide shade. It's nice that they extend out a little. Hopefully the brand you ordered will be better than what I got. In many cases, you DO what get what you pay for. Ours certainly were not top of the line, I will say that. :)

I had one that I liked so much I got a second one. With sand in the base they tipped over much more than I liked. So I cut the bottoms and filled them with cement. This helped a good deal. They are pretty much a parachute so they will twist and swivel on breezy days. Mine have the same vents in the top but they only help a little.

where they are worth their weight in gold is that they can swivel with the sun all afternoon. My typical umbrella cast a shadow 15 ft from the table we were eating dinner at. It looks silly with it twisted completely to the side, But if it works, who cares.

Wow..cement?! So I assume they pretty much stay permanently where you sit them or are they still mobile (but very heavy)?
 
Yes mine sat at the outside of my pool area fence so I was never going to move them. The cement helped a lot of the tipping over. If you Choose that route, cut maybe 1/4 of the bottom, Enough to be able to add cement but still enough base left to be under the cement when you flip the base right side up for usage. In the end I found poles that I cemented into the ground because my umbrella poles were straight and by throwing away the bases I got 2 feet closer over the patio. The curved pole like the pic you posted wouldn’t work for that.

Interesting. We have seen them all over the place locally, and I think my wife wants one. My neighbor has one and I do definitely know that he has to crank it down in the wind and not forget to crank it down when not in use. The "it only lasted 2 years in the sun" comment is interesting. I'll have to forward that on to the wife. The local ones all seem to be the same manufacturer and size (and either beige or red), but the price varies from $400 (Lowe's) to $600 (Costco). I swear they look the same... if there a quality difference (product line) that you can buy for these, or is it just because Costco is spendy as usual?

Oh yes. Mine stay closed until we go out to the pool. They get cranked up but only while we are out there. Of course there are days that are too windy so we just give up trying to reposition it after several attempts. But 8 out of 10 days they work great. The other 2 we just deal.

your other point was spot on also. I have seen many different qualities depending on the seller. I got mine at Kmart and it was surprisingly sturdy for the $300 full price. I bought them both on clearance for about $150 each.

We have had a 13' Treasure Garden umbrella that we got end-of-season at our garden center for about $750. It has a heavily weighted base but we do keep it closed in windy conditions (windy enough that we don't sit outside anyway). You're unlikely to find any umbrella that does well in high wind. We're starting year 5 and the fabric is still holding up well. Aside from the occasional need to tighten a few allen screws, it functions as well as ever.

I just looked those up online. They look nice and really heavy-duty!

My jaw is still open after gawking at it last night. Yeah. It’s *cough*. ‘pretty good’.

also I think you will be fairly protected more often than not from the wind. They are above the fence but there is still plenty of windblocks around to help.
