Mustard algae

I’ve been battling mustard algae since the summer. Looks like sand and comes back after being brushed, to all the exact same places in the pool. Currently trying to slam the pool using test strips, day 5 and seems like little progress is being made. My question is should I stop and wait for new test kit to arrive? I can shock the pool and add sodium bromide and all the algae turns white, vacuum it out, but it still comes back. Any help is appreciate.

Really tough to do much of anything until your get the right test kit (TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C). I recommend the TF-100 if you haven't ordered yet, but either is good. Don't go crazy with chlorine (aka regular bleach) at this time until you have one of those kits. Read-up on our pages and the links below and in my signature. Also go ahead and update your signature as well to include which test kit you ordered. It will help later. We'll help you through the process.

Reading from Taylor k-2006 test kit, fc 24, cc 0, ph7.4, ta 80, ch 400, cya 30, remember, I slammed the pool last Friday - Wednesday with test strips, that’s why the chlorine is high. Thanks for you advice and help.

Okay. For future testing though, please stick to the Taylor FAS-DPD (powder & drops) for accurate FC testing. As you now know, those strips are horrible. Definitely let the FC drop since you are currently 2Xs higher than recommended for your SLAM level as seen on the FC/CYA Levels. Once it drops back to about 12, continue the SLAM Process until you are sure you've passed ALL 3 SLAM criteria.

From there, after you pass the regular SLAM, if you still believe you have Mustard Algae, only then do you increase the FC to MA levels, and even then only for 24 hrs. Good luck!
