I need to replace the motor on a failed Hayward SP32152EE. The pool guys are pushing my to use B983 model which looks to be a slightly smaller motor than what comes standard on this pump. I'm concerned that this motor will be ridden harder than the stock one was with the undersize and will fail even faster. Am I justified in my concern? I'm considering replacing it with a B984 instead which will slightly oversize it rather than undersize it.

The other concern though is that the larger pump is more expensize.

By the way, the pump is 6 years old.

The stock motor is 1.5HP x 1.6 SF = 2.4 THP
B983 is a 1.5HP x 1.47 SF = 2.21 THP
B984 is a 2.0HP x 1.3 SF = 2.6 THP

Im not sure what my total head is on this pool but it is roughly 10,000 gallons with a attached spa. So I need the dual speed for the spa and for the cleaner/bublers when they are run but 60% of the time, I just run it at low speed.

Thoughts??? I need to do this immediately as my pump is dead. Also i've never replaced a motor before, is it very difficult? Do I just need to also order the GOKIT81 KIT and replace the o rings/gaskets?

Also, The pump doesn't seem that old but should I even replace the motor rather than just biting the bullet on a new pump?

The 1.5 hp full rate Tristar pump uses a 2.4 total hp motor.

The 2.0 hp max rate Tristar pump uses a 2.2 total hp motor.

Both pumps are the exact same pump.

They both have all the same parts including the same impeller (SPX3215C).

So, a 2.2 total hp motor will work.

Don't get a regular seal kit. The seal that comes with the kit is usually junk.

You want seal PS-4280, which is the upgraded seal.

You also need:

SPX4000Z1 Diffuser O-Ring
SPX3200T Housing O-Ring
SPX3021R Impeller Ring

A two speed motor is somewhat expensive. So, it might be worthwhile to consider going to a variable speed pump.

The Tristar variable speed pump should be an easy replacement. With the unions, it should fit right in.

Your local utility might provide a rebate for switching to a variable speed pump but they might require professional installation.

The Tristar VS comes in two models, a 1.85 total hp and a 2.7 total hp.

Thanks for the reply. Its hard to justify the variable speed pumps. The SP3202VSP model, which is what I think I would need given the pump I have?, is around $1000 where the SP32152EE which is the dual speed that I have is around $700. The variable would be a nice to have but $300 more is hard to swallow.

Fixing this thing would cost around $350-400. But I also noticed a very small crack in the housing of the part the motor connects to so I'm not sure if i'll also need to replace that. It is small now but that may just grow. So likely needs to be replaced as well.

I may just go with the variable speed 3202. I am correct that this model is the correct replacement for 'SP32152EE' ? I believe this will just drop in but am a little confused about the HP and flow as compared to my dual speed I have now.

On the wiring side, If I have a gold-line controller I assume i'll need to make some changes to how its wired in?

I really appreciate all the help. Before coming here I tried to call Hayward. :) That was interesting. They kept telling me to talk to my dealer. :D

The SP32950VSP or the SP3206VSP are the 2.7 hp versions. If you need as much flow as you have now, this is the pump to get.

SP3202VSP, SP3202VSPND (no digital control) or the SP32900VSP are the 1.65 - 1.85 hp versions.

What is the software revision for your automation. Is it Prologic or Aqualogic?

Hayward might have a rebate available.

Valid on purchases with pool professional installation made from April 2, 2019 to June 16, 2019. Rebate submissions must be made prior to June 29, 2019.
This offer good only on the TriStar VS 2.7, or TriStar VS 1.85 (Eligible Model Numbers: SP3202VSP, SP3206VSP).
SP3202VSP......$75.00
SP3206VSP......$75.00
SP32950VSP....$100.00
SP32900VSP....$100.00

Also, check with your utility for available rebates.

Its a prologic with revision 4.30

How do these equate though to the one I have which is a 1.5HP ( 2.4 THP ). I essentially just need the power I have now plus a little more (and less) would be nice.

Edit: I just saw your comment about the ones to get given my current flow. Thanks for that.

The 1.85 version will be less flow. The 2.7 hp version will be able to provide more flow.

Any of the pumps can be controlled by the ProLogic.

The SP32950VSP comes with a 4 year warranty vs the standard 1 year warranty if that makes any difference.
