coping on fiberglass pool

HI,

i am looking for some advice on installing coping on a fiberglass pool.
I have a 3 feet cement base around the pool that is ~ 1/2 inch lower than the top of the "lip" of the pool
The fiberglass surface of the "lip" is smooth
I am looking for what type of bonding agent (glue) to use to make sure the coping adhere to the fiberglass pool "lip" as well as what to material to use to fill in the gap between the coping and the existing cement base

let me say that i am not by any means a contractor and have any knowledge related to paving.
I did hire a contractor to do this job for me but i would like to get a better understanding
The fiberglass pools are relatively new in Canada and there are not too many contractors with experiencing when it comes to this.
My contractor told me that he plans to fill the gap between the cement and the coping with compacted gravel and glue the coping stone to the edge of the pool.
I am wondering if that is sufficient since the coping will be held in place only by the glue. The edge of the pool is also very smooth so will that be a problem when using some kind of glue?

Welcome! I suppose there are various ways to do it, but in my case, our flagstone was mortared over the lip. You can see our build images from the "My Pool" link below in my signature. Hope that helps.

My setup is a bit different. I want to put pavers on top of the concrete base to continue past the coping.
The issue that i am having is i do not know if the glue on the edge of the pool will be sufficient to hold it in place.

Epoxy will hold it in place. I don't think you understand my question. If you epoxy the coping where you indicate, the rear of that coping will be about 1.5 inches above the existing concrete. How do you intend to bring the concrete decking up so it is level with the top of the coping stones?

The compacted gravel cannot be glued to the coping. So while the copping can be adequately bonded onto the fibreglass, I don't like the idea of "floating" the other part of the coping onto gravel.

A nice discussion with PB is in order to get you satisfied. If he insists that is the best way, I would ask for some type of extended warranty that you would be happy with.

I cannot imagine just epoxy holding cement coping bricks to a 3" fiberglass lip for very long or very successfully with that rear overhang. Any reduction in fill under the back side of the brick will pop that brick loose. I see lots of brick reattaching down the road. The normal way to do it is to pour the deck surrounding the pool up to the level of the fiberglass coping and then cement the brick to the deck and also to attach it to the coping, usually with an expansive adhesive like silicone.
