My pook gets alot of debris. my 2 skimmers both have normal baskets, and my pump has a stocking to block other stuff from getting to filter. works really well. pool is staying clear. but the stocking gets fill within 2 days, and flow drops. dont really want to put a stocking in the skimmers. but what can i do so the skimmer can collect more. thinking about putting a mesh screen in it. will that work

Are you saying you have a stocking in the pump basket? That is not recommended.
I am confused. You say you don't want to put a stocking in the skimmers, but you do want to put a mesh?
I would suggest you just use hair nets in both skimmer and do not put a stocking in the pump which could starve the pump of water.

I second the motion. A lot easier to put hairnet in skimmer basket AND a lot easier to discard and replace.
Putting a stocking/sock on the skimmers (unless they are hard to get to) would catch more before the pump sock

Definitely go with the hairnet. I use these and they work great. Since I've been using these the frequency at which I have to backwash my filter is probably 20% of what it was before. At the price point you just chuck them in the garbage...no more cleaning the sock.

I actually have a skimmer sock that I re-use all the time.... I may venture into getting hairnets because I just about throw up whenever I see dead worms in my simmer sock when I vacuum my pool... So yup... invest in the hairnets for sure.
prefect guys. a hair net seems to be exactly what im looking for to put in the skimmer. i also have to main drains that go straight to the pump which is why i still want to have something in pump basket so prevent stuff from getting to the filter. what can i do about that
i'm pretty sure you will find that much less stuff will get to the pump strainer after you start using hairnets in the skimmer. see if that works for you.
I don’t use skimmer socks until I feel I need it for some special reason. This weekend I suspected some surface fuzz was a DE leak. Sure enough. This was after about 6 hours with pump RPM cranked up. Confirmed I had DE leak
my sand filter just doesnt to the job good enough. last year my water stayed dirty and kept getting algae outbreaks. this year i started using socks in the pump and pool has been prefect since opening. i would like to get a secondary cartridge filter or de fitler to polish the water but not in the budget right now. so i just have de that i add to the sand
You are taking an unneccessary risk putting socks in the pump.
We also do not suggest using multiple filters as that just addes headloss and makes your system less efficient.

I think you have found the key hear. Your statement about algae outbreaks lead me to believe that your pool was in need of a SLAM to rid of hidden algae. ALso could point out that you had too low of FC on a daily basis and allowed the algae to come back from new.
I feel like your current clear water has nothing to do with skimmer socks, rather a statement on your current chlorine level and presence of algae.
This is a great point. Perhaps this is more a problem with chemistry than physical filtering.
but. wouldnt a extremely high phosphate level and low flow level it an algar bloom alot easier to happen. only thing i have done different this year is increase flow and lower phosphates.
The flow should not matter much and the phosphates certainly do not matter if you keep the FC above the minimum for your CYA (see [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]) at all times. Then you would not get algae.
As far as this forum is concerned, you are off on your diagnosis. Maintain proper FC/CYA, and algae cannot live in your water. If you prevent algae from living, then you can dump buckets of phosphates in your pool and it wont matter, since there wont be any living algae to eat the phosphates.
You could possibly convince me that last year your pool had poor circulation (for dozens of reasons) and with poor circulation, you had poor chlorine distribution, and therefore a higher chance of an algae outbreak.
But, I subscribe to the theory If It Walks Like A Duck and Quacks Like A Duck Theory, so I say that you just did not have proper FC/CYA ratios for your pool. If this were my pool, I would study up on the FC/CYA chart, the concept of SLAMming the pool rather than simply shocking the pool, and get the bag/net out of the pump basket.

Hair nets in skimmer baskets...awesome after cutting grass. I have been using them from the beginning and I only have to clean the pump basket once a month!
