Just ordered tf100 XL and spinstir. Where do I begin?

This is a continuation. We are only able to check roughly every 3 hours and added chemicals when needed. I notice that overnight I am losing still loosing about 3 points and my CYA is between 30-40(much closer to 30) probably due to rain. I need to check FC more frequent today and wondering if the 30 CYA may actually be a bit low for my South Florida sunny pool.Could the low CYA be causing the FC to burn off too fast?

You can definitely bump the CYA up more to limit loss during the day. I'm in GA and have my at 50ppm. However, CYA won't effect your loss during the night. Make sure your last check of the day is 30 mins or more after sunset, and your first check of the morning is before sunrise. Your pool won't get any UV during this time, so any loss is from organics in your pool, ie algae, leaves, people, etc

If you do raise your CYA, make sure you raise you FC according to the FC/CYA chart in my signature.

Wait until you're done with your SLAM to raise the CYA. You're fine where you are.

Once your SLAM is done, you can consider raising CYA to 50 or 60 to limit sun loss, but right now extra CYA will just cost you more chlorine to complete your SLAM.

Yea, I meant that you can definitely raise your CYA to fight off the Florida sun after your SLAM is done. Thought I'd mentioned that, sorry. The higher your CYA, the more Chlorine you need to add to keep your FC up,.

Ok. I will keep the CYA level

Do I really need to check before sunrise? I checked at 8:30 this morning and the sun is still very low in the sky so I have absolutely no sun in my pool until later in the the morning. Let me rephrase, I do not want to get up on labor day while it is still dark. :)

Well.. hmmm... how about testing when the sun goes down then blinge watching some fascinating show on Netflix till about 5 in the morning then test before going to sleep?? LOL I'm a night owl, that would work for me.

hehe, if you stall for a day and do it before work on Tuesday, I don't think you'd be any worse off. :)

I don't know exactly how much it effects the degradation of Chlorine, but UV from the sun can still give you a sun burn on a cloudy day. I've just always heard to do the check before the sun comes up, makes sure there's no chance the sun burned any of the chlorine. And no, you don't have to do the check tonight anyways, I just recommend trying getting a check after sunset and before sun rise as you do your slam to get an idea of your progress. First day you lose 3ppm to algae, then 4 days later you lose 1.5ppm, you know your getting close then. Not a requirement though until you do think you're at the end of your SLAM. Btw, definitely make sure youve got removable ladders out and check behind lights, the back of your skimmer weir and anywhere else algae can hide from plain sight. Algae is very sneaky and good at hiding out of sight until it gets a chance to start regrowing.

That's my favorite method, lol

Now this is getting frustrating. I went from 17 at 11:30PM last night to 15 at 7:00am this morning. Am I doing something wrong? I have been brushing everyday, washing the filter, pump running 24/7, and adding chlorine? Seriously is 7:00am already too late do the overnight test? The sun is barely above the horizon and I have zero sun shine on my pool plus I have trees and houses blocking the sun. The force is not with me.:grrrr:

SUCCESS. I passed the the overnight test and the water crystal clear. Thank you everyone for your help. Now lets hope Hurricane Irma doesn't pass through to destroy my pool water chemistry.

Congrats man! And yes, I'm expecting my pool to be overfilled to the point of 0 CYA from this thing. Looks like it's headed straight up FL and GA towards my house. :'(

Florida and Georgia are basically screwed by this Cat5 hurricane

Better luck to you and the rest of the Floridians, at least I've got like 500+ miles between where it's likely to come on shore and me. However I've heard it's supposed to still be a Cat3 before it gets to GA

Thankfully (for me), everyone around here seems to be firm believers in the tabs, so there's still plenty of bleach available. I have noticed a sharp decline in the number of tabs Walmart has in stock though. Even had a neighbor tell me that I shouldn't even bother putting up a pool cuz the first rain we get it will turn green. After 3 storms he just tells me that I'm lucky and expects it to go green sooner or later. Too darn stubborn to think he could be wrong and anyone else right.
