New Old House, New Old Pool....

Very nicely done. Now it's time to sit back and wonder why you never knew pools could be this easy. Next comes the urdge to tell everyone you know with a pool about this great method you learned to keep you pool clean. Then you tell them you just use chlorine and they look at you like you are telling them jet fuel can't melt steel beams.

Exactly correct I have to resist the urge to stop the total stranger headed to the register at Home Depot with a jug of CYA and inquire "what's up?".

I have already introduced my family and friends to TFP and some have purchased good test kits. My daughter even talked shop with their "pool man" inquiring about their CYA levels and his sanitation plan. Great watching the light bulb switch on isn't it?

I have learned to tread lightly on peoples perceived reality and their lack of critical thinking when it comes to world events. A wise man once said, "Its easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled." Better left for another forum I think.

Keeping FC levels at 6-7 each night with 1 gal 10%. By morning I have lost 1ppm FC and after 24 hours my FC is at 3-4ppm. CC is always below 0.5ppm and pH at 7.4.

I'm having a similar CYA issue, and I've been using Trichlor (i'm just learning). Are you saying that your daily routine will be 1gal nightly? What's the long term plan here. I'm thinking of similarly switching to liquid bleach, but I'm confused on how to keep it in the system and just how much of the stuff I'll need.

Hi brettnem,

My daily routine now after the drain and refill is averaging 80oz of 10% bleach each night. This raises my FC to 5.5-6ppm and by morning it is at 4.5-5.5 so a drop of 1ppm or less overnight. After 24 hours the FC is 3-4ppm a drop of 2ppm and I dose with another 80oz. Be advised do not get complacent as chlorine strength is a moving target so use your test kit to verify your levels and add more if needed. Also estimate your bio-load and adjust FC as need prior to and after having many guests, dogs or a high amount of debris from wind. The key is stay ahead of the game with the FC and monitoring your system to keep pH in the zone. That said until you get your CYA under control your sanitation costs will be high and if things go sideways your ability to SLAM and get in front of it will be very difficult if not impossible.

I have been very cautious about raising my CYA level and have stopped just shy of 30ppm. I lose the black dot at the top of the fill tube above the 30ppm line. The temps are high here and the sun is on the pool from 9am - 4pm but my FC loss during the day is at 2ppm so the results are good in my opinion. I do intend to use the trichlor pucks if away for several days so I expect to add a few more ppm before the summer ends. My pH will drift up to 7.8 with the 10% chlorine but I bring it down to 7.5 with 60oz MA and have had to do this twice in the last two weeks. I am bringing my CH up slowly to the low 200s and my TA was 140 out of the tap. So far so good.

I have said it before, this site is a gold mine for the pool owner and deserves our support. Have fun.

Update. Almost two months now from the drain and refill and life is good.

I finally have my CYA between the 30 and 40ppm range and my daily FC use dropped noticeably. I did use three Trichlor pucks over the course of a week to bring my CYA up 5ppm and track the FC release. I then switched back to 10% liquid bleach.

Overnight FC loss is now 0.5ppm or less. After 24 hours total FC loss ranges from 1 to 1.5ppm. Evening additions of of 10% bleach are averaging now only 60oz and if I am gone for a long weekend I can raise my FC up 5-6ppm by adding 1.5-2 gal of 10% which puts my tested FC up to 11-13ppm, below my shock value but more than enough to keep my FC in the zone well after 3 long hot days away with the filter running only 5 hours a day.

My pool only gets used by my wife and I. The wind is light so not much debris gets into the water now but the temps are in the low 100s for days in a row now.

I have also installed an outside shower and find myself rinsing off before and after using the pool. I like it clean.
