Help with Quad DE

Haha! We do have a lot of shade. Here's a pic of it right now (3:25pm) and already starting to shade.

Do like they do in waterparks, after every hour of pool use then a 30min recovery period for a quick FC/pH check and some filtration. No one allowed to swim during the recovery time...

LOL. I run the pump the whole time during a party (a bit noisy but) so that the deck jets, waterfall, and bubblers can be on. I am considering a quickie "outdoor shower" setup so that people can rinse off BEFORE getting in the pool. Also adding a full bathroom right next to it so that they don't have to track water inside so much.

Maybe I should put the multiport on "bypass" during parties, but then the water still has junk in it and needs to be cleaned later so either way I lose.

If it's acting sticky, you might consider upgrading to a glycerine filled high precision gauge. They are much higher quality than the cheapo OEM gauges. They cost $15-$20 and they're easy to install. My high flow air relief valve developed a leak last year and so when I replaced it, I also added the liquid filled gauge. Much nicer setup.

Looks good - no pressure change and good water clarity. Keep the SLAM up, measure FC/CC today and consider doing an OCLT tonight. If you pass all three SLAM criteria then you can let the FC drift down for your Swim-a-thon tomorrow. OR, if you want, you can just maintain your FC through the party and then finish up the SLAM after the festivities. Just note that high FC + lots of swimmers could lead to elevated CC levels and give your pool water that "gross chlorine pool smell" . Not much you can do about it unless you limit bather load.

Yes, I want that. Where did you buy it? Drop-in replacement?

My FC isn't changing - still 32 solid. I haven't had any supplemental chlorine production for a while now but its holding steady. I should maybe turn the solar on but I think the pool is warm enough already so likely won't.

I was hoping FC would drift already but still holding nice and steady so I guess I will just make sure to balance pH unless there's any other thing I can do to artificially lower FC, but I'm doubtful that's a wise idea.

You can get the gauge on TFTestKits or Amazon, wherever is cheapest. And yes, it's a simple unscrew old gauge, screw in new gauge. Use teflon thread sealant and it only needs to be a 1/4 turn past hand tight...any harder and you'll crack the plastic.

Just leave the FC as-is. It will get used up quickly enough. Any chemical means of lowering FC will just screw things up.
 
My clarity was this way before. Only recently have been having issues. But definitely notice a flow difference after cleaning the filters.

Can I turn everything back on to auto (including SWCG)?

Also I did a very quick backwash - like maybe 10-15 seconds. I didn't put any more DE in because I know lots will stay on the grids but am thinking maybe a little wouldn't hurt. What do you guys use to measure DE with? I have a large scooper that my pool builder gave me but I think it is actually larger than a 1 lb scoop.
 
I don't backwash. I only need to tear down my Quad once per year so I do it twice (April/Sept) just to be safe. No one really knows how much DE is lost during a backwash and it's different for different filters and pumps. So all you can do is guess. Maybe add 1/2 scoop and see what impact that has??
 
Still looks amazingly clear. I dare say even more clear than the crystal clear I was used to before all the filter issues. Perhaps a once-yearly TSP/acid wash is in the cards. Or just having the spare set helps.

Today's numbers - I haven't added or touched the chemistry since before the party:

FC 9.0
CYA 65-70
TA 70
pH 7.5
Salt 2900
Temp 90F

I have the SWCG set at 100% but I'm not sure it can keep FC at 6.0-8.0 at that level. I guess we'll see. I do have ozone which I have heard helps but how much I don't know. I definitely want to keep FC above 5.0 from now on. I suppose I could add bleach once in a while but would rather not have to do that.
 
It seems to be that maybe part of the overall performance issue is far too much backwashing. It seems you are doing tit every week when once or twice a year is plenty unless you have constant and heavy use.

Even then hen maybe once every 4 months. Your Quad 60 is oversize for that pool (which is really great by the way), so I'd suggest a good Dee cleaning once a year unless you have crazy use and or crazy trash in your pool.

As as a comparison, I've got a Q80 and 28k gal. I get crazy trash in my pool. Constant leaves, pollen, dust, etc. so much so that I have to run my robot every day and sometimes 2x a day jut to keep up with it.

I recently cleand my filter filter after 9 mos and it was not very dirty at all. Wish I had waited a year.

So so you have a significantly better water to filter size ratio than I do, likely less trash load, so Backwashing at all seems to not make sense. And cleaning it every 6montha I'd expect is overkill.

Now maybe this SLAM introduces an insane amount of stuff to filter. But if you are truly done, and your CCs are staying low, I'd suggest you Dee clean it, put the right amount of DE, and then don't tough it for 6 mos at least.
