I want to add borates to my pool (SWG). I can adjust pH and alkalinity no problem, but my CH is 800 and my CYA is 150. Will the high CH and CYA affect the borates in a negative way? I know I will flush them down the drain when I drain my pool this winter to get my chemistry right, but I want to see how I like borates for now. I plan to use Boric Acid as my source. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Neither will matter to the borates. The higher CYA level adds to your TA a bit, but not much. My CH is at 1100ppm and I can keep my pool water balanced just fine (I usually run 50-60ppm borates and 90ppm CYA). Honestly speaking, if CYA is the only reason you plan to drain, I wouldn't or, at the very least, I would just do a few partial drains and try to capture monsoon season rains to help with dilution. A 150ppm CYA is not that hard to manage and I assume you have an SWG. All you really need to do is keep your FC in the 7.5-9ppm range and your water should be fine.

I guess it's hard for me to understand why you are interested in borates when you have an almost unmanageable pool. Why would you not want to get your CYA down.

I am keeping my FC about 10. I have done several partial drains to get to CYA 150! Thanks
I have reduced the levels over 50% by doing partial drains for a week. It is getting hot here so I do not want to do a complete drain at this time. I will need to perform a complete drain this winter as I also need to remove scale as a result of an "unmanageable pool." I completely agree with you on that point. The previous owners did nothing except add Chlorine tabs. Hopefully the pH will be easier to manage and I will keep the FC up in the meantime. Thanks

You dont really need to wait till winter to drain and refill, if you already plan on doing it, grab the bull by the horns and go for it. If your scared of winterizing your pool and opening to a swamp, dont be, just follow the TFP steps and you will enjoy this summer way more than you think.

From what I have read it may be too hot at this point to drain it. I am not going to winterize the pool as far as I know, but I have not got that far yet. I still have a lot learn about pools. Thanks.
