I installed an above ground pool this year, took several weeks... worth it yes but a lot of work! anyway, I have not had time to do much landscaping and am wondering what I need to do for the winter. Attached is a typical picture of the surround. Do I need to put down some crushed stone around the pool for winter? Wondering about drainage and or water ice buildup on the outside of the wall?

You probably do want to have something to cover and protect that area. Choices would vary based on the likelihood of flooding due to heavy run-off in that area. If that's the high side you might be fine. If prone to flooding, you want to keep water from rushing under the pool and causing a wash-out scenario. More posts to follow I'm sure.
