When the maintenance light goes on on CircuPool Universal40, should I always apply a 5:1 muriatic acid solution to clean the cell or should I try to clean the cell physically first and see it helps with the light?

Inspect the cell. If there is no visible toothpaste like buildup, put it back into service.
If there is any buildup, first get as much of it as you can with something long, thin and non metal. Wooden BBQ skewers, popsicle sticks, the handle of a plastic spoon, or zip ties have worked for many.
Use vinegar if there is any build up after that. Use a diluted Muriatic acid as a last resort.
