Vacuuming sand back into filter

Hi all,
I recently discovered that I cracked my lateral assembly when I removed it to deep clean the sand filter before opening the pool, and it resulted in some sand getting into the pool. I've got a new lateral assembly installed, but I need to get the sand out. Is it safe to vacuum it back into the filter, or should I vacuum it to waste instead?

I agree. Why buy more sand when you have enough just sitting there in the pool waiting? ,
