Semi-Newbie trying to open the our pool problems

Hello! We have a 20x40 pool in Virginia. We are opening it up now. It’s all filled. the pump and filter aren’t running properly. The sand filter gauge doesnt seem right. When it’s turned off it’s still at 20. The isn’t water fillling up the pump. However when we turn it on water comes out the return valves in the pool. I am guessing there is air in the system. I can’t find a place to bleed the air out. I filled it up with the hose. I am at a loss. Please help.

Can you see water running through the pump cover? I'm thinking you are since it's making it's way out the returns. The sand filters with top valves such as yours don't have a bleeder. Just run it for 30 minutes and all the air will purge itself out.

If the gauge is sticking at 20 psi when off, it's time to replace it.
