How long can I leave the pump run without the water filtering through? We seem to have this problem often of not being able to get the pool to prime. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

It should prime in a few minutes.
If you have difficulty getting the pump to prime, normally that is a sign of a suction side air leak. When was the last time you removed the pump basket lid, cleaned and lubricated the gasket? When running, does your pump basket have air in it? Does the pump basket stay full of water when the pump is off?

I don't think we've lubed it this year. But I did notice last year that we were having air in the pump basket. We are in the process of interviewing a lot of pool companies because our pool needs new tile coping and plaster. I wonder if I should be having a leak detection done?
