Options to Get Chemistry Back In Balance

I suck at chemistry. FAS/DPD..... Pink never gets clear with R-0871....? Stopped at about 45 drops....

How much water did you start with 10ml or 25ml .... 45 drops would have been a FC of 22.5ppm or 9ppm ... you just have to keep going if your FC is high.

BTW, you should use 10ml so eash drop is 0.5ppm.

OK, ran all the tests again:

Basic, as already reported Chlorine > 5PPM (orange), pH ~6.8 (yellow)
CYA w/ 50% tap water ~90
CTD 82 drops - 41ppm
TA 18 drops - 180
CC no change/none
CH 90 drops - 900 (we do have hard water here)

Water is crystal clear, swam yesterday, no ill effects felt beyond temporary eye redness which I always get with any amount of chlorine. One box of borax added on Thursday, don't see much effect maybe in increase in 0.1pH.

Your pH must be really low since whenever the FC > 10ppm the pH test reads artifically high.

Was the CYA of 90 after doubling or before doubling the reading? Guess before, so your CYA is really around 180ppm ... clearly quite a bit higher than the recommended 30-50ppm and thus needing a lot of water change.

What is CTD??? That should just be FC.

Well, with your CYA at 180, this is a problem. With a chlorine level that high your pH test is pretty much invalid. Your normal chlorine level at that CYA is 14-21, shock level is 38, so you aren't completely out of range. The first order of business would really be to replace about 75% of your water to bring your CYA level down.

Just as a side note, I am willing to bet that once you get your CYA normal, your pH balanced, and your chlorine level in the proper range for your CYA that your eye redness will be greatly reduced or eliminated. Only one way to find out...

Actually you may have the ability to do a Reverse Osmosis treatment (only available in Southern Cal and AZ). But, that will likely run your $300-400 ... not sure if that is cheaper than the water or not.

Yeah, there are several reverse-osmosis companies in SoCal for that very reason, it can be cheaper than water replacement. It will remove virtually everything from your pool water, CYA included. Could be worth looking in to.
