New SWG and pool…add muriatic acid?

Get 5ppm FC in there and maintain a 5 daily for now.

Testing under 30 CYA is sketchy at best. Add 15 ppm and wait for it to register.

Lower the PH to a high 7.

Test your tap water CH and we'll go from there.

Order a taylor K1766 from TFtestkits.net if you want it guaranteed to come fresh or Amazon if you want it only guaranteed to come.

*edit. I see you bought the salt kit. Double check your receipt for TF100-salt.

Then double check the kit for chromate indicator and silver nitrate bottles. (Yellow and orangey brown)

Ok my kit does have those in it, but no directions for use.

I put 81oz of bleach in a couple days ago and the chlorine went up, but it didn’t last.

What do I use to raise CYA?

Sweet. You're better off with no instructions. (Long story). They are in there somewhere I bet on a 3x4 index card. Or a 8 inch thin strip of paper. Probably both.

Anywho

10 ml sample.
1 drop of chromate indicator and swirl
Add drops of silver nitrate while swirling
Each drop is 200 ppm

It will go from milky yellow to red / brick / salmon or whatever color you see. It's a drastic change and you can't miss it when it's time to stop.

Did you order a smart stir also ? This test sucks to swirl by hand.

Ok, I’ll try it.

Cyanuric acid / pool stabilizer granuals. Walmart / HD / Lowes has it in 4 or 5 lb bags in the pool aisle and they rotate who has better $/lb so Google it before you go. Make sure the bag says 100% in the ingredients.

Hang the dose in a sock(s) carrot on a stick like, in front of a running return. Some time later or even tomorrow it will squish right out. Be careful not to lose any out the top when squeezing. It's acid and you don't want pieces sitting on the floor. Brush any if they do fall out.

After it's squished out, it should show in a day.

Ok, I’ll add that now. Should I wait to add bleach until tomorrow?

No you're almost at 0 FC. Its less of a concern overnight, but still.

Pour a pencil sized stream of chlorine in front of a different return than the CYA and you can add them at the same time. Or pull the CYA sock, add, give it a few mins to mix and put the sock back.

Ok. 81oz gets me 4.2. Is that enough or should I go a full 5?

Who has 81 oz bottles ? :ROFLMAO: Yes that would have been close enough for our need right this moment of 'having some chlorine in there' until the CYA buffers it.

On a side note, what strength chlorine ? I can't get 4.2 with 81 oz in 13200 gallons. At 10% it's 4.8 and at 6% it's 3. (The typical 2 choices)

For CYA - only add enough to get to 30 for now. Your FC has been very low, so you likely have some amount of algae in water.
SLAM Process is easier at lower CYA (lower CYA, lower FC needed for SLAM), then once complete and passed an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test, you can raise it to necessary Texas summer levels (70-90 CYA).

^^^^^^ @DrivenPT remember when I told you there was a whole thought process and hierarchy to the system ? Yeah. 😁

I've been working on the how with you step by step.

Reggie just laid down the why. 👍

Got it. I’m a slow learner.

I used Clorox bleach which comes in an 81 ounce bottle and says it yields 7.17%.

Did the sock with 1.65lbs of dry powder overnight and squeezed it out this morning about 6am. Just tested again and came up with a CYA of about 26. Chlorine of 3.5.

Felt like I was pretty accurate with the tests except for the TA and salt tests which I am not sure about. For what it’s worth the salt cell still says 3200.

Let me know what you guys think from here.

Thank you for the help!

Ok. Never again. :)

Chlorox has 'chloromax technology' which is polymers that will cause foaming at some point. (Unknown variable level for every pool).

Head to Walmart and get pool essentials chlorinating liquid for $5.67 which is 10% on the bottle it will say 24XXX, which is 2024, the day of the year it was produced. So do simple math with 30 days per month. We are 3.5 months into the year. 3 months(90 days) plus 13 days. If the bottle was made today it would say 24103. Dig through the shelf for the freshest, no more than 3 months old.

TA is plenty close enough if you were off by a little. We know it's not 20 and not 200. You'll feel better about it with some practice.

The smart stir really helps the salt test (and CH). It makes the others more consistent and easier too, but particularly the salt and CH tests. It's the best $44 you can spend on your pool IMO.

But don't take my word for it. Go try and take somebody's away. Let that be your guide to how important it is. Protip, be prepared to fight dirty. They will if they need to. :sneaky:

Dang. Ok. Won’t make that mistake again.

Should I add muriatic acid to get the pH down or do I need to SLAM?

Should I add muriatic acid to get the pH down
yes. Target 7.8 from 8. Let it mix 20 mins and test to make sure it is a 7.X. if it's still 8+, dose to 7.8, mix and test.

Out of range may be a little out of range, or alot. So repeat until you are back in range.
do I need to SLAM?
Welp. We need to raise your CYA to SWG levels, but need to Overnight Chlorine Loss Test first. If you lose FC without the sun, something is brewing and you need to SLAM.

It would also be wise to OCLT because you're new and we want to start proper with a clean slate.

Ok, did the OCLT and the results are in.

Yesterday FC started the day at 3.5 and by the end of the day was at 2.0. Added bleach per OCLT guidelines and got to 3.5.

This morning the FC was still 3.5 but CYA is lower. Do I need to add to the CYA with the sock?

It is not possible to measure a CYA of 23. CYA does not change rapidly unless you drain a significant amount of pool water and replace it with fresh water.

Well, I’m new to this so it’s entirely possible it is a measurement error. Maybe the 30 was a little off or my 23 this morning was off. Light conditions certainly weren’t the same. I’ll test again and see what I come up with.

When you do the CYA test, try this next time.

Once you have your solution ready, back to the sun, etc. Fill the vial to a line, say 80, lower the vial to your waist level and glance for the dot, you see it, add solution to the 70 line, glance, see it, repeat until you no longer see it with a glance. Then use the CYA value one step above the line you read. So if you stopped at 50, use 60 ppm CYA.

The vial is a non linear scale. So it is not reasonable to interpolate between the lines. Just use the whole numbers, such as 50, 40, 30, ....

CYA is 30

my understanding is that the results of the test indicate that the chlorine loss is happening during the day? I assume that is due to the low CYA….do I add another sock of conditioner?
