What exact model number is the heater?

How old is it?

Is it indoors or outdoors?

Check for the LED that shows what error you have.

Can you show a video of the startup and a picture of the error code?

Other Codes that may be seen:

AGS - Gas Shutoff. Temperature in heater is too high.

HLS - Hi Limit Switch Opened

PS - Pressure Switch Opened. Clean filters and ensure correct water flow.

AFS - Air Flow Switch Failure. Do no operate heater.

SFS - Stack Flue Sensor Error. Combustion may be incorrect.

E01 - Temp Sensor Failed. Water chemistry may be incorrect.

E02 - High Limit Sensor Failure. Ensure water flow is correct. If this reoccurs,

E03 - Thermal Fuse Failure. Temperature exceeded limits. Do not operate heater.

E04 - Fan Sensor Failure. Sensor error or blocked / sooted heat exchanger. May be bad gas supply or failed parts. Do not operate heater.

E05 - Stack Flue Sensor Failure. Sensor error or blocked / sooted heat exchanger. May be bad gas supply or failed parts. Do not operate heater.

Heater Comes on, runs for 5-10min and shuts off with red service heater indicator and CODE C3 or 3C. But I can not find this code anywhere. Ideas?
Appreciate the very informative replies - I've attached pictures of the code (none of the ones discussed) :-(
Also, to answer quesiotns, it is an outdoor unit and only 3 years old (dirty looking form wonderful pollen)
Anymore advice is appreicated before i spend a fortune on a service tech

Check the Fenwal for an error LED.

Can you show a video of the startup sequence?

If you are getting a "Service Heater" LED, then you will have an error LED on the control board or the Fenwal of the 5 button heaters.

Check the diagnostic LEDs or the Fenwal box LED for blinks.

Diagnostic LEDs are on the back of the older 5 button non-connected Pentair MasterTemp heater board.

The 6 button RS-485 Connected Heater displays the diagnostics on the heater display or IntelliCenter display.

Normal boot up is 888, 128 and then rX where X is the software revision number.

The reason that it displays 888 is to prove that the display works with all parts of the display.

Most likely, the display is missing parts and the code is a partial display.

Since it says "Check Heater" you will have an error on the back of the board or on the Fenwal.
