Monthly. If you aren't using stabilized chlorine or getting several inches of rain a week then it will not change quickly enough to warrant testing more often than once a month.
Ok so tested it when I opened the pool in May it was at 70 so my target chlorine level was 7-9. Just tested it now and it's at 50...which is nice that lowers the target chlorine level.....I just hope that there is no problem

No problem. You lose a bit due to splashout and about 3-5 ppm per month due to oxidation.
