    Welcome to TFP!!!

Why you add chlorine (bleach) of course

How are you testing your water?

What is your CYA level as that determines the FC level you need to maintain ... see the FC/CYA Chart.

Have you discovered Pool School yet? You may want to start with these so we can speak the same language:

Welcome Dede! Lots of superb experience on this site, but it really does start with the proper test set as noted by Jason above, the links he posted, and the ones in my signature. Take a moment to check them out. Also, please consider posting all of your pool and equipment info into your signature for future reference. It helps TFP readers when trying to help answer your questions. By the way ... sweltering hot near San Antonio today. Lets get that pool of yours ready for the summer by posting your test results (FC, CC, CYA, PH, TA, and CH). Welcome!

Another good resource to help with dosing is Pool Math

A good test kit is an investment, not an expense.
