I help run a large pool at a resort. After not inspecting our filter all winter, we found our filter sand was like concrete. We chiseled out old and put new sand in. What could've made our filter sand so hard,like concrete?

That's where I'm leaning to the more I read. Since we don't test for this there, its probably the blame. I will get a test for CH.thanks
Have you added any clarifiers? Are you sure? Some multipurpose pool chemicals contain clarifiers. They're designed to stick particles together.
The guy that has been running the pool the last few years does use clarifier. But not a whole lot in this pool. Since we are filling daily with hard well water, I'm leaning towards high CH. And there always seemed to have sediment on the bottom
