Is it filter sand, or quartz aggregate from plaster, or what?

A few weeks ago we started noticing a bit of sand in our in-ground pool. Vacuum it up, and there’s more the next day. The amount, though small, seems to be increasing. Although the plaster appears to be in good shape, we’re wondering if the sand is from deterioration of the plaster. We’re not experts (obviously) but we don’t think it looks like filter sand. It looks like clear/white quartz with some blue grains mixed in. Any help with ID or advice is much appreciated!

This is a common issue with newer plaster pools and the aggregate comes from the plumbing pipes near the plaster surface that eventually breaks away and ends up in the pool.
The amount of aggregate found is comparatively small to the amount of surface area of exposed aggregate and this would explain why the surface still seems smooth.

Thanks for the explanation. I’m still not quite clear on where this is coming from. When you say plumbing pipes near the surface does that refer to where the jets are? I don’t know where else pipes are located near the plaster, except perhaps the drain. Thanks again for your help with this!

Since it’s been going on for several weeks with slowly increasing amounts of sand, it’s starting to seem like something other than a one time issue. Could it actually be filter sand? The sand and laterals were replaced 4 years ago.
