    Sand or cartridge filter

Thinking of switching to a sand filter. Currently have a cartridge filter that we have to clean 1 or 2 times per week. On our 3rd filter in 5 years. Thoughts?

Wow, that is a lot of cleaning. How does the water look? What size filter is it?

Normally it looks great. This past week it became cloudy and the flow from the pump is way down.

You shouldn't have to clean a cartridge filter that often. Something is either not sized properly or some other issue is occurring. I haven't had to clean my cartridge filter all summer.

Thanks! If I stayed with the cartridge filter what size would you suggest?

Too frequent cleaning of ANY type filter is a pool chemistry issue most ALL the time......usually invisible algae.

Can you post a set of test results?

Since your location is not in your profile, answering this is more difficult. But, I would suggest at least 225sqft should be plenty.

I've got a 100 sqft filter and overall I'm happy with it. During the hot summer months it gets cleaned once or twice a month, then in winter it goes two or three months.

The higher you go up in square footage the longer you could go in between cleanings. The more the fabric, the more dirt it can catch before it gets too dirty to filter properly.

What is your price range? I can give you an idea what to look for.

    Re: Sand or cartridge filter

The thread seems to be veering back towards a new filter. That's fine if you want one, but I will repeat this post because it is glaringly true.....
