    Cheaper Sand Alternative?

Hey folks, time to change out the sand in the filter again. But, have never been able to get my arms around $12/50lb filter sand. Is there a cheaper alternative, play sand, etc.? thx, SR

Pretty sure it's #20 silica sand, but not positive, so wait for others to chime in.

Why are you changing it? There are very few scenarios that require a sand change. Most of the time a deep cleaning and resettling does the job.

    Do not use play sand.

    You want #20 silica sand.

You can sometimes find it for half that much, or less, though it varies by region. Prices are generally lower in regions with lots of swimming pools.

As Smykowski mentioned, there is hardly ever any reason to change your sand. Normally sand is only changed when it has clumped up so badly that it can not be broken apart.

Guess I shouldn't believe the guys at Leslie's. How would I clean or treat the sand in the filter versus replace?

Cleaning and resettling the sand in a sand filter is described in this post.
