    Separate gas meter

I was told by a neighbor that it may be advantageous for me to have a separate gas meter for my pool since I am heating both my spa and pool with 400000 btu gas heater. Does anyone know why?

    Re: Separate gas meter

There is no reason to have separate meters (in fact, it may not be possible as that might be considered multiple "services" and may actually have higher costs from the gas company). Although you may need to increase the size of your meter to handle the added load. Around here, the gas company does that for free ... knowing that you will be buying more gas.

They're probably concerned with the delivery volume and pressure if you add it to your house meter/regulator.
Most place the gas utility just installs a larger meter for the house to accommodate the pool heater. There could be reasons that they can't or won't do that, in which case it would be advantageous to have a separate meter.

    Re: Separate gas meter

I just had a larger meter installed on the house after getting a $900 bill. The gas company came out and the guy (fellow pool owner) spotted the small meter right away. If you have too small of a meter and the demand is too high he said it can mess with the reading and give inaccurate results. Call your gas company and ask if they change out meters. Now some charge for this service while others do not. Something that also might come into play is the gas supply line to your house.
