It depends on what kind of filter you have. Cartridge filters are not backwashed. Only some DE filters can be backwashed, but all sand filters required periodic bakwashing. General guidance is at a 25% rise from normal pressure, but I tend to just backwash mine whenever I need to get rid of rainwater from the pool.
