I wouldn't expect any odor in the skimmer other than the same smell of your water. Is there any debris breaking down in your skimmer? Is your water chemistry good ?

I empty mine every day but it does smell -- dead bugs and caterpillars seem to be the culprits. Give it a little soak to get the decaying bug debris out.
