Over sized pumps

Today I installed a FloVis flow meter at the pump discharge.

85 GPM @ 12.5 psig. At that flow rate my pool turns over in less than 3 hours.

The motor is rated at 3 HP.

Its safe to say that this pump is over sized. I see a two speed pump in my future.

Certainly over sized for filtering and circulation but it may not be over sized for the waterfall although 85 GPM is very low for a 3 HP pump. What is the pump make/model and do you have 1.5" plumbing?

2" piping. I'm not able to read any info off of the pump itself, all of the info has been weathered away.

Then how do you know it is a 3 HP pump? Does it say SPL anywhere near the 3 HP rating?

It has a 3 HP motor.

So there is still a label on the motor? Does the motor label say SPL anywhere or is there a service factor listed?
