Can I drain my hot tub for an extended period of time?

I am in the process of selling my hot tub to a close friend, but they will not be able to take it for 2 months (patio being built). I would like to shut it off and drain it for the next 2 months until he's ready for it, but am not sure if that will mess things up for him in the future. Does...

Alkalinity keeps dropping in Bromine hot tub

Thanks for the reply! Still trying to figure out my best options with my daily routines. I did end up adding baking soda the other day and that helped and got it within range (70 - 80 TA), pH was in range as well about 7.6 or 7.8. I forgot to check the floater for a few days and measure Bromine...

Alkalinity keeps dropping in Bromine hot tub

Hey everyone - hoping you can help me out here. I've been using the bromine method (3 step) listed in the sticky here but have been having trouble keeping TA and pH in line. For awhile TA was stable and pH was slowly creeping up. No problem and I would add dry acid every once in a while. But now...

    Paper wasps under cover

Well this discussion really took off. I don’t want to distract from it but just provide an update. I was able to open the spa in the afternoon and scare them out. Only about 3 or 4 at the time and the nest was just starting. I ruined the nest and did spray some peppermint oil mixed with water...

    Paper wasps under cover

Hey everyone - we've got some paper wasps that have been trying to get (and have gotten in) under our cover through the gap where it folds. I just noticed them yesterday and they had started to build a nest (very early stage). So I opened up the cover and that scared them away for a bit. I also...

    Bromine too high

Just checked bromine level tonight with K-1000 and it was off the charts, orangey color. TA is 80 and pH is 7.5. I took the bromine floater out to wait for the level to go down. Is the best path forward to just add the floater in every once in awhile? I thought I’d just have it in all the...

    Bromine too high

Mdragger88 - thanks! I will take a further look into the instructions for the bromine tabs I have. I thought it said to just keep a floater full and as they are gone, add more (I might have just made that assumption too, so will double check). I recently switched to bromine as I'm not able to...

    Bromine too high

Does anyone have any thoughts? Or is it just trial and error with the bromine floater until I figure out how much it should be putting in?

    Bromine too high

I’ve been struggling with a high bromine level and low pH and TA. I have a floater with 1 inch bromine tabs in it. It’s fairly small and fits about 8 tabs. I have the holes open about 50% and the tabs are all gone in about 4 or 5 days. My tub is 410 gallons. I have been just filling it back up...

Ahhsome - still some foam after drain and refill

Just wanted to make sure I got everything out  looks like a did! I’m the guy that over tightens screws, over engineers things I’m building, and now I guess over Ahhsomes 😀

Ahhsome - still some foam after drain and refill

Good discussion. I wanted to give you all an update. Just like @Ahhsomeguy said, I didn’t add more for a purge again (one suggestion) and waited it out. I rinsed the filter on Monday, that evening the water was fairly clear and very low / no foam with the jets all on. Today the water was crystal...

Switching to bromine - start up questions

Thanks for sharing your routine. Makes sense and I’ve been following that today. So far so good. Had super high TA so slowly bringing that down. I added the sodium bromide and some bleach to keep things in line that way until TA and pH are set. I have the Taylor TF-100

Ahhsome - still some foam after drain and refill

@Ahhsomeguy - great thank you for the post! That makes a lot of sense. I’m going to take a look in the morning and either purge again like you said or ride it out. Thanks again!

Ahhsome - still some foam after drain and refill

Ok thanks. One other question before I do that. My fill water is coming through a whole house iron filter, house water softener, special iron hose filter and then to the tub. The hardness will be next to nothing and I’ll add hardness tomorrow. I was reading that having low hardness could be...

Switching to bromine - start up questions

I just drained and refilled my tub after an Ahhsome purge (other thread). I’m going to switch to the bromine method here (from the sticky). I have a few questions for my start up. I have high iron from my well and fill by going through a whole house iron filter, water softener, special iron...

Ahhsome - still some foam after drain and refill

I was finally able to purge for the first time with Ahhsome as the weather warmed up for the first time since we got the new tub at the end of February. During the purge I ran the tub jets on high for an hour and got TONS of foam (overflowing). I did get some green scum around the edges but not...

    Water still slightly yellow

Thanks mknauss! Will do. Since I have 2 now I can keep rotating them while soaking overnight. Newdude - that makes me feel better that it was mostly gone. But I could do the refill and drain and refill you said next time I drain just to be sure.

    Water still slightly yellow

Yep - will do! Also, if it does come back and is still iron. Is it possible that when I have drained the last 2 times, there is still iron in the pipes as they don’t fully drain? I had high iron on initial fill, have since drained twice. This last fill showed no iron but I hadn’t turned the...

    Water still slightly yellow

Ok thank you! I will start to work on that. I didn't know you could wash the filters in the dishwasher. For the yellow scum, just keep scrubbing off the water line sides right? Or will it also deposit under the water and I'll need to brush the sides and bottom? Also - do you think I'll need...

    Water still slightly yellow

Yep I hear you - no more Aqua Finesse. How do I do the SLAM process with a hot tub? Keep adding the granular chlorine that I pictured above? And what is shock level for a tub? Sorry, I had a pool previously, but a little unsure with only having 400 gallons now. As for regular house water...

    Water still slightly yellow

Nothing on the back besides a chart to show how much to use depending on size of tub. I looked on their site and it doesn't say either. You think that could be my issue? If so, will it just eventually go away and then I shouldn't use again? Or should I drain and refill and not use that?
  26. J

    Water still slightly yellow

Yeah you’re probably right about Aqua Finesse. They said to use once a week. Here is a picture. Also a picture of the chlorine I used.

    Water still slightly yellow

I did just order a Taylor K-1716 to test for iron myself. I just have no idea how iron could be getting through all of my setup. And the store did a specific iron test and it was 0.1ppm. They tested other times before I changed and went through the water softener and it was 1.7ppm. So I think...

    Water still slightly yellow

Good questions. It’s etidronic acid. I added the granular chlorine and Aqua Finesse as well 24 hours after Metal Gon. When the chlorine and aqua finesse was added was when the water turned yellow
