Planning on adding Borates... Should I assume 0 to start?

Hi all, I'm now thinking about adding borates to my pool and spa. Should I assume 0 to start, or should I test with the strips first?

    Different types of muriatic acid

Hi all! I see in the app there are several different options for muriatic acid. It got me thinking... why would I buy 1 over another? What's the difference? I get concentration is one aspect, but what is this 20o Baume (Old owner left me a bottle of 34.6% - 22o Baume). What about this stuff I...

In Ground Spa with no Cover: blue solar blanket only

Hi All, I'm wondering if there's any reason to use a higher ppm for chemicals like CYA or change anything with regards to the Sticky "How do I use Chlorine in my Spa?". The Spa is a 550 gallon, fiberglass, shell that's in-ground about 2/3; i.e. it sticks up a foot or 2 out of ground. It is...

Recommended levels from Hayward vs TFP

Hello experts, Hayward recommends the following for their Salt and Swim SWG: CYA: 30-50ppm TA: 80-120ppm However, on a SWG thread here (Water Balance for SWGs) TFP recommends: CYA: 70-80ppm TA: 60-80ppm Do you all suggest I stay within manufacturer's range or TFP's? TIA

Is there a way to change the recommended ranges?

I was wondering if there is a way to change the recommended ranges. Specifically, CH and CYA for a Chlorine/Bleach Hot Tub. The Sticky Thread for Chlorine Spa shows significantly lower levels than the app. I would like to keep the warnings on, but be able to adjust my ranges. TIA!

Just got my TFP Test Kit - CYA Mixing Bottle

Hi all, I just got my first TFP test kit and I'm wondering about the CYA mixing bottle... Should I cut a bit off the top of the bottle to open it for release or use a brad nail to poke through? I want to make sure I'm not opening it too much and ruin it before even getting started. TIA

Adding sulfuric acid to test for alkalinity turns test yellow, not red

Can anyone explain why my test for alkalinity is turning yellow instead of red when I add the sulfuric acid? It works fine for my pool, but it does this when testing my fresh filled spa.

Putting winter cover on pool during some demolition

We are having some construction done on the house that requires about a week of demo/framing where we want to put the winter cover on the pool to protect it during the process. In order to keep it clear during this hot week, my thoughts are: 1. Add a large bag of shock (3lb) the night before 2...

Best cover for large (10' diameter) spa with 2ft rim

Hi all, Can anyone recommend a good cover for my spa that has a 10' diameter and no real 'edge'; it's more a 2ft wide pool deck around. Should it sit up on top or float on the water? Easy to remove, preferably.

Cannot register bromine after sodium bromide, tabs, and mps

Hi all, I switched my hot tub over to Bromine from chlorine. Tub was balanced and at below 1ppm chlorine. I added 3 2oz packages of sodium bromide, have a "bromine" tab floater, and leisure time "renew". Having a hard time getting a bromine reading with my Taylor test kit. Note: I was told by...

    Ground settling broke my autofill

Hi all, I bought a house with this pool last year and over time the ground has settled. That caused the autofill bucket to shift and now there's an opening lower than my desired water level. Ultimately, even unplugging the port to the pool causes pool water to drain. I was thinking of trying to...

Installing new Waterway Jets - lube?

Hi all, I'm just wondering if I should use any magic lube when installing new spa jets. They're the waterway plastics threaded ones. I ask because the new jets are really stiff adjusting the collar. Thanks!

Fastest way to lower alkalinity; empty a bit and then refill?

Hi all, I have a 1600gal IG FG spa with chlorine sanitizer (trichlor). I just opened late last week. This is my second year with my pool/spa and I believe I misunderstood the impact baking soda has on ph and alkalinity resulting in an extremely high alkalinity (was at 310ppm yesterday). I got it...

Moving Salt Cell and Exchanging Diverter

Hi All! I'm starting year 2 with this pool that was installed in 2012. Last year, I replaced the heater and salt controller with the exact same brand/models that were already there to keep from moving any pipes. This worked fine, but I realized whomever installed the pool initially put the salt...

    Pool Cover Material

Hi everyone, I need a new pool cover this year and it seems I have a choice of several materials from 2 categories: mesh and solid. I live just north of Chicago. How do I know what is acceptable material for my pool? Solid & Mesh Winter Safety Pool Covers - Latham Pool These are the prices I...

Re-pipe because salt cell before heater

Hi all, I want to redo the pipe setup for my "new to me" pool. Last year was year 1 and I replaced anything that was broken 1:1; i.e. Hayward Heater bombed, Hayward salt 'n' swim controller and cell bombed, and the sacrificial anode hadn't been changed since 2013. Honestly, the heater and salt...
