I can't personally speak to the reliability of other brands besided Maytronics, but the forum activity here seems to indicate they all are prone to wearing out in 3-5 years. Maybe another brand has more readily available spare parts for DIYers willing to fix them on their own?

That probably wouldn't help, but if I could find an equivalent motor, maybe 3D printing something to reconnect it to the old drive gear and bulkhead would work. More likely just some epoxy would work.

This may be the culprit! I just soaked the test vial and pipette in bleach for a few minutes and rinsed them out- the test vial showed kind of a yellow discoloring after that, so I got out a scrub brush and scrubbed the inside of it out really well, rinsed it again and took my evening...
