Need help with faulty Hayward Multi Port Valve (I think)

  • Located in McKinney, Texas
  • Pool built in 2005 (18 years ago) and is 13,000 gallon chlorine in-ground
  • All equipment is original with exception of pump which was replaced several years ago
  • Walked out front door of house and heard water running, and upon inspection saw that it was flowing from a pipe in the landscaping bed that has a double elbow and dumps into a larger PVC pipe that I believe leads into the water sewage. Went into house and checked all sinks, toilets, showers, etc and nothing was running. Only water item running was the pool pump. Later in the day when the pump shut down I walked out front and the water had stopped flowing in the pipes. Same happened this morning, no water flow and then when the pump kicked in, the water started flowing.
  • I went to the equipment pad and noticed that the little clear glass bubble on the backwash pipe was showing movement, which was odd as the valve is set to filtration. Also my fountains were running at normal strength into the pool so I assumed the valve was set to filter as I didn't think the fountains run when the water is backwashing into the exit
  • I did backwash this weekend, and returned the valve to filtration position when I was done.
  • Wondering if the valve is broken and water is running both through the filter and backwash???
  • Any suggestions? I don't know the life expectancy of these valves.
  • If it needs to be replaced, wondering if anyone knows of a reputable repair person in the McKinney/Frisco/Allen/Plano suburbs of Dallas.
  • Also, with it being 100+ degrees, I can't risk not running the pump, but worried I'm going to have a heck of a water bill this month.
Thanks.

Welcome to TFP.

Sounds like you have a torn spider gasket in the valve allowing water to leak out the drain.

What is the model number of the MPV? SP74??? shows under the handle.

It may be...

I just checked. It is model SP740DE.

Is a torn spider gasket something that's easy to replace? I'm not very handy, but would like to avoid a huge service expense.

It is easy once you have done one. The first one can take a bit of study as to how you get the handle off, then carefully note how the parts come off so you can put them back on the same way.

Some spider gaskets are glue in and you need to scrape the old one off. Then use some silicone to tack the new gasket in place.

Then the challenge is to get all the parts reassembled properly. Make sure the top and handle are properly aligned with the gasket position. You should have noted the position of the gasket openings, the top, and handle when you removed the parts.

See the instructions below...

Hey Allen - I really appreciate all your expertise on this.. The video helped alot as I was struggling with how to do this.

The video also gave good confirmation that this is the issue, as the handle has gotten progressively more difficult to turn during the past months. It also makes sense why water is going through filtration and into waste.

I just ordered the part on Amazon so it should arrive on Thursday.

It sounds like I'll have to drain the filter some so that I can glue onto a dry surface. Will the water get murky if I have the pump shut off for a day? It's crazy hot here in Dallas.

How do you chlorinate your pool?

Pour 5ppm of liquid chlorine into the water daily while your pump is shutdown and the water will be fine.

I typically put 3-4 of the large tabs in the chlorinator and then broadcast 1 pound of shock on the surface weekly.

What is your CYA level?

Not sure. I take the water into the local pool store for testing and then they always telling me things are off and I need to spend $100 for chemicals.

Typical Pool Store story. You may want to learn about TFP care methods to break free from the Pool Store.

Seriously that would be great. I literally clean the pool weekly, then do the chlorine tabs, shock and two capfuls of PhosFree. But in the store literally each week they have me buying a ton of Crud.

I just wanted to THANK YOU for all of the assistance. Your assessment was correct and it was a damaged spider gasket. Ordered a new one on Amazon along with adhesive and lube and followed the video steps. Let it sit for 24 hours, turned the pump back on and the issue of water flowing into the waste line was resolved. Really appreciate all the generous help.

UNFORTUNATELY, I have another issue. There seems to be a very slow drip coming from the Hayward MPV so I'm wondering if that is something I can seal up or does it need replacing? I've provided some photos from different angles. I don't think it's the O Ring, as I looked at it before reassembling and applied lube all around.
