Is this a big deal?

Our pool was completed last summer and I have always noticed this but recently figured out what the issue is. We have an auto cover and the area where the cover comes out of the box is tiled. The edge of the tiles on the flat top always looked off to me. I finally grabbed an extra tile I had laying around and discovered that whoever laid the tile did so without regard for the finished edge of the tile. So that means that in some tiles I see the finished edge and others show one of the three rough edges. When looked at as a whole it doesn't look good. The same mistake was made in the skimmers which are also tiled.

My question is if you think this is a big deal or not? I feel like it speaks to the quality of the workmanship and attention to detail. I still communicate with the pool builder on a variety of other issues and I feel like I should point it out. I attached a phot of an extra tile with the finished edge laying on top of a tile showing the rough edge.

you are correct and informing the PB helps gauge the performance of the subcontractor's work. Whether the PB repairs it or not, he is now aware of poor workmanship.

We've had a several issues with our build so the builder may just write it off as one more complaint from picky customers, but I feel that for the price we paid the minimum we can expect is basic attention to detail and proper construction. I am going to mention it, but don't expect much of a response, if any.

That would drive me up the wall.
It would drive me up the wall and straight over to that contractor's throat.
A swimming pool is probably the second largest investment most of us will ever make (next to our house purchase).
And this is what we get for our money????

What an unbelievable lack of attention to detail. Completely unacceptable.

I'm wondering if this can be fixed without making a total mess of that area.
I'm fully confident that a skilled, experienced, professional tile setter could make this right, providing that those tiles are still available. It won't be cheap, though. Only issue may be slight mismatch because of different batches. Might be worth the effort to see if you could locate some tiles from the same batch, perhaps from the vendor who supplied the tiles during the build.

How many were mis-installed?

In my opinion, it is the sharp edge that is the biggest threat to the integrity of the cover.

My biggest concern would be that the razor sharp edge will slice the cover to shreds.
Not seeing the situation in person, I can't agree or disagree, but you have a valid point.

Mummer, I guess it is your call - if this is a concern (is it?) - try to find a 'bullnose' solution (which would require a lot more time and effort, IMHO), or just do a cosmetic repair on the the 15-20 that are mis-installed.

Myself, I would opt for the cosmetic repair (especially since you may have enough replacement tiles already), and then deal with any cover issues down the road.
