New 2 speed Motor Question

Hello I'm hoping i can get some help with an issue i'm having with my pool pump motor. So my 4 year old single speed motor started going out on me and i ordered a new motor from a pool website. Because i live in California they couldn't sell me a single speed replacement and instead sold me a dual speed replacement option. I just received the motor and now see that it's calling for a common wire which i don't have. I have two black wires L1 and L2 and a ground wire. I also have a Jandy Aqualink RS system, on inside of the panel it shows it can control dual speed motors after adjusting some dip switches. I haven't opened the panel to verify the dual speed relay is installed and not sure where to look for that. I'm hoping for some guidance on what to look for in my panel to verify it can handle switching between the two speeds and then also how to wire the motor as i don't have the common. I've read that connecting L1 to either high/low and L2 to common will accomplish this but want to make sure its correct before wiring everything.

Any guidance/help would be appreciated.

That should work but post a pic of the motor data plate for us to confirm exactly what you have.

The Aqualink 2 speed relay is not standard so I doubt you have it.

To control a two speed pump you need the Dual Speed Pump Relay Kit - 6796. This replaces one of the high voltage relays and will switch power between the high speed line and the low speed line. It has a 2 pin connector to plug into the PC board relay socket.

The relay type is SPDT, maximum 20-amps. Pump should be 2-horsepower maximum at 220 VAC.

You program the full duration that you want the pump on at high speed. Then you program the low speed as a subset.

The Zodiac 6796 2-Speed Motor Relay Replacement Kit is designed to use with Zodiac Jandy AquaLink RS Control Systems and also is compatible with Zodiac Polaris EOS and Sol models.

You can wire your pump motor as discussed above.

You have one free relay position which will allow you to in’s the 2 speed relay that you do not have.

You will need to move your spa blower to AUX5 so that the 2 speed relay can be installed in the AUX2 position. You do that by moving the relay plugs in the sockets on the board. Then follow the directions for installing the 2 speed relay in place of the unused relay.

Also you should put a 9V battery in your Aqualink panel so that the clock does not lose the time if power is lost.

And your main pump CB and WFE PUMP CB should be changed to a GFCI breaker when replacing the motor.

You have 8 circuit breakers and 5 devices on your panel so I do not fully understand what is going on in your panel.

The wiring instructions attached above are a little confusing. Will i need to run a common wire to the pump? If so 14 gauge solid copper?
is Aux 5 taken by something? It looks like aux 6 and aux 7 are empty on the board.
is the free relay position the one on the bottom right? What unused relay will the 2 speed be taking the place of? Sorry for the confusion, i replaced the original motor no problem but didn't expect all this extra stuff when i ordered the new pump.

Yes

Yes, THHN/THWN solid copper 14 gauge for a 15 amp CB. 12 gauge for a 20 amp CB.

It does not look like it is based on the labels above the buttons on your panel.
It looks like aux 6 and aux 7 are empty on the board.
You only have 6 relays and it looks like you have a RS6 board. AUX6 and 7 are not enabled on a RS6 board.
is the free relay position the one on the bottom right?
Yes, that has no wires connected to the screws.
What unused relay will the 2 speed be taking the place of?
You either remove the lower right relay or install the 2 speed relay next to it. Four relays can be put in a row and you have three.

You seem to get it based on your questions.

Thank you AJ and James. The wiring diagram i understood with the exception of the common wire, since my initial question went in a direction where i didn't have a common, i think that wiring with just using L1 and L2 and no relay would just have it running high all the time. the 2 speed relay seems the right way to go though and i'll need to run the common wire from the panel to the motor.
The previous owner who had the pool installed was going for a real party atmosphere and i'm not quite sure what is going on with the panel. There is an attached spa and pool propane heater that is connected to the panel as well. How would i verify if there isn't anything on aux 5?

This wire has a bad connection; you can see it goes from yellow to brown to black, which means that it is burning at the connection point.

You might need to replace the relay.

The top left is the Filter Pump relay.

If AUX 5 does not have power wires connected, then it is not being used.

You don't need to worry about AUX 5.

Just install the two speed relay and wire as shown to the Filter relay.
The 2 speed relay needs to be plugged into AUX2 and DIP SWITCH2 turned on.

The spa blower is currently on AUX2 and needs to be moved to another unused AUX. It looks like AUX5 is unused based on the lack of a label over the button.
