While waiting to Close

New pool owner, and learning a lot from this site and those on it- Thank You!

We're done swimming for the year (there won't be any days warm enough from now on), but I'm guessing I'm a week or two out until the water temp will consistently be below the suggested 60 degrees for closing. The avg. temps here are going to be between 50-75 for the next week or so. Is my assumption about how long it will take for the water temp to permanently come down correct?

Second, As I understand it- I should SLAM my pool 2-3 days before finally closing. Since I'll be SLAM'ing the pool anyway, is it okay to cover the pool for the next week or two (to keep leaves out) and just let it sit while I wait for the water temp to lower?

What type of cover do you have? You can cover the pool, but try to let the pool breathe a couple of hours here and there. If you want to SLAM and close, that is possible, but a lot depends on your cover or at least adding another cover over your mesh safety cover.

Ideally the water in the pool will be a steady 60 or below when you close the pool. How long that takes is dependent on a lot of things. It shouldn't take too long once your air temps get down and stay that low.

You can close the pool with the water warmer than that but you may want to lift the cover and check the FC once a week or so until the water is cold. You will need to manually mix the chlorine in the pool if the pump system is all packed up. Or you can use a submersible pump to circulate and mix the water. I would wait until water temps are below 70 if you choose to go this route.

Thanks for the replies. For this year I’m just using the tarp that the previous owner left. I’m not worried about drowning hazards because the kids won’t be out there during the winter (fully fenced AG).

i think I’ll be ready this week to finish closing. Thanks!
