Water leaking from backwash/waste line while in filter mode

Help! My husband is threatening to fill the pool with dirt and be done with it!! We inherited this pool when we purchased the home in 2010 and have never had any issues like this before. This season after opening the pool, we had water leaking from the waste line. After a backwash, rinse and reset to filter the water would continue to run from the line, anywhere from a trickle to a steady run of probably several gallons per hour. Did my research and decided we needed to check the spider gasket, it looked fine, but just to be safe I bought a new one, followed the instructions for replacing that. Waited the full 24 hours for set up before reattaching the MPV key assembly. Put it all back together, fingers crossed....still leaking. OH, and now the MPV handle is loose and just didn't feel right. I ordered a new key assembly, arrived today, husband attached the new part, got pool going and STILL LEAKING!

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what to do next? What else to look at? I'm at a loss right now.

So far this season, we have purchased a new pump & motor, new gaskets & o-rings, spider gasket and now MPV key assembly.

I'd look at the spring that belongs between the valve diffuser and the valve top. It should provide the tension to hold that spider gasket down. Make sure you didn't lose it or any washers that belong in there.
