TONS of bugs at bottom of pool

Hi! We just opened our pool about 2 months ago and up until now it was going great. Just the past few days we noticed these grey bugs crawling on the steps, then realized they were all over the bottom of the pool by the drain in the deep end. I've been googling bugs in pools all morning and can't find any pictures of the bugs we have. They do not look like back swimmers or boatman. They are maybe half an inch long, grey, but not smooth. Kind of diamond shaped bodies...my husband said the ones at the bottom are dead. There are HUNDREDS of them. Yesterday they were all over the walls in the deep end but this morning they seem to mostly have fallen to the bottom, some are still stuck on the walls but not as many as last night. We just moved into this house and filled the pool with new water just this season. We have it cleaned and checked once a week and we skim it every day. We don't vacuum it, could that be the problem? I also don't know where these weird bugs are coming from. We live in a wooded area so there are lots of trees in our yard and it was raining almost every day last week if that makes a difference? Hopefully someone can help me identify these bugs and a way to resolve this, I'm so freaked out by it! Thanks for taking the time to read :)

Welcome to TFP

Sorry to bug you but do you have a picture of the bugs?

Being near the woods you are bound to get a whole host of visitors to the pool some welcome and some not. When there is a swarm of bug like you are describing sometimes the only thing you can do it wait them out. We had a very bad year for gypsy moth caterpillars this year at my house and there simply isn't anything you can do but wait them out. You can also try applying a general purpose insecticide between your pool and the woods to create a barrier to slow the problem down. I'm not a huge fan of insecticide use like that for environmental issues but, I have used them sparingly from time to time.

Welcome to the forum!

Routinely brushing and vacuuming the pool is part of the required maintenance.

Check if your area has a migration occasionally. In my area we get an occasional sphinx moth catepillars everywhere. I have had to keep scooping them out for about 24hrs. Not even mentioning the scorpions, rats, and lizards in my area.
