TFP program

Guys, how would you answer this question. So I got my buddy on the TFP water chem program now for couple months and I think he's giving up. The other day he goes "this doesn't make sense. How does people who hires pool guys only to come once a week when chlorine needs to be added everyday?

I know by getting responses on here, it'll help him rethink it. Appreciate it

Well, if you use pucks then sure you don't have to deal with everyday...but with pucks comes the raised CYA then eventually "chlorine lock" which will necessitate replacing the water. Pool companies don't care about that, they will be happy to tell you that you have chlorine lock and must drain/refill the pool...and they will charge you $200 to tell you that.

I am sure others that are much smarter than me will chime in with more succinct answers.

Pool services operate on a "dump & run" schedule. They have to. So they check chemical levels (hopefully accurately), then dump some chemicals into the pool, and more than likely add some chlorine tabs (pucks) which over time increase the CYA too high. In some areas of the country with a large water turn-over rate or short swimming season, they may get away with that. But in the hotter areas with a longer swim season, the pool needs a more consistant non-stabilized chlorine routine each day, either from a salt water generator or pool chlorine (aka reagaular bleach).

If he knew the turnover rate of weekly pool services because the pool goes green and people think that the next company will take care of it better (they are pretty much all the same, in with the new boss same as the old boss), repeat every few months/years, then he might reconsider his statement.

Pool guys aren't financially invested in caring for your pool, only in getting paid to keep it looking good. But they have to add chemicals for quick results that can be harmful to your plaster or equipment down the road. By the time the damage is evident they are either gone or plead ignorance.

One example is pouring in copper laden algaecide. The copper builds up and stains the pool and they shrug their shoulders and tell you its time for a drain and acid wash.

We know better than that.

Oh yeah, Maddie reminded me of a good point: does he have anything he insists he do himself and doesn't want other people to do for him? Like I wouldn't let someone work on my computer, it's my baby, I built it and I can fix it myself. If he has something like that then just bring that up, "Wait, you won't trust X with someone else, but you would trust someone else to make sure the water you swim in is safe?"

Once you know your pool, it's not necessarily every day either. When I was a jug dumper, I could either add 1/2 gallon/day or a full gallon every other day. That means 3-4x a week. For comparison we feed our cats several times per day.
