Tests Showing Odd Results

Pool Newbies here ...

We have noticed that our pool is losing water ... about 1" a day, so we've been having to add water each evening to keep the level up. Been doing this since last Monday.

Tested CL and PH through the week and levels were good.

Results today are off. (see below) Checked CL Tab Feeder yesterday and tabs were almost gone, so I added more CL tabs yesterday afternoon. Still surprised that we're not getting any readings for CL this morning.

We have someone coming out this week to try and locate the leak, so we can see what our next steps are. We're pretty sure its somewhere in the lines from the pool back to the pump/filter. When we filled the pool and it sat without the system being on, we didn't have the water loss issue.

Also - we have our pump/filter on 24/7. Should we leave it on 100% of the time, or should it be turned off at some point?

Per the results on the calculator, we added the recommended levels of Bleach/Shock and PH Down (acid) this morning. We're going to need to get baking soda for the TA.

If anyone has any suggestions/recommendations/advise, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! #feelingoverwhelmed :confused:

FC = 0
TC = 0
PH = 8.0
TA = 70ppm
CH = 120

Is the ground around the filter wetter than the rest of the yard? If so look closely around the filter for any leaks.

I forgot to tighten the pressure sensor on the heater & only noticed it because the ground was wet. I'd hate to see you pay for a service call if its just a leak around the filter.

We're using a Taylor K6000 kit, and our water is crystal clear.

Just retested:

FC = 1.8PPM
TC = 0
PH = 7.6
TA = 90PPM
CH = 130
CYA = 0

I can't help but feel we are doing something wrong. #stilloverwhelmed

Hello and welcome! I'm new too, but wanted to quickly chime in until the experts arrive....your CYA needs to be increased. If you are at 0, you won't be able to maintain FC. Read "Pool School" and it will explain a lot. Also, the CYA/FC ratios. Also look at Pool Math...that will tell you how much of what to get your CYA up.

On this episode of "Pool Test Results" ...

Hi all!

Overwhelmed Pool Newbie here again with another facinating episode of "Pool Test Results" On today's episode, we see the CH is low, but not really sure what it does or means. See results below!

FC = 6.4
PH = 7.4
AK = 70
CH = 48
CYA = 0

FC = We know the FC is high (just added new tablets yesterday), so I adjusted the level on our CL feeder. We'll see what it says when we test again tonight.
PH = This is right where we want it - YAY!!!!
AK = This is a little low - what are your thoughts on adding Arm & Hammer Clear Balance tablets to help?
CH = this one baffles me - not sure what it is or what the results mean
CYA = 0 ... this seems to be the norm for us, and we are ok with it since we have the CL feeder

Also have a question about the pump/filter. Since we had the pool opened, we run it 24/7. Is this what we should be doing? I have seen some posts of people sayting they only run theirs 6hrs a day. We live next to the woods and get a lot of debris in the pool, so I would think keeping ti running all the time is okay, but not really sure, and honestly I never really thought about not having it on all the time.
Thoughts, suggestion and advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks! -Nancy :splash:

What type of tablets do you use in the feeder?

I'm surprised with the CYA 0. Is this a brand new pool?

We had the pool refinished this spring, so in theory its semi-new. Was filled with all new water in early May.

Tablets are "E-Z Clor" brand; stabilized 3" concentrated chlorine tables for sanitizing. Active Ingredients: Trichloro-s-triazinetrione @ 99%, Other Ingredients @ 1%. Available Chlorine 90%.

Also - we do have a leak on the bottom drain, so we are having to add water daily (1-2"). We had a Leak Dector Co come out this past thursday and they found one leak, so this week we will be in process of trying to find exactly where it is in the line, and then what it will take to fix it.

Results from this morning's test:

FC = 6.8 (turned the feeder down again - not sure why this keeps reading high)
CC = 0
PH = 7.4
TA = 70
CH = 190 (added 5lbs of calcium chloride yesterday)
CYA = 0

Those are your standard Trichlor tabs.... Each tablet will add 3.3ppm to FC & 2ppm to CYA in your pool.

If you have dissolved 15 tabs, you have added 30ppm CYA

I have no idea why the CYA test keeps coming back with 0. It is totally possible that we are doing something wrong, but I'm following the instructions provided with the testing kit to the letter. When we add the shaken water solution to the smaller tester tube, the black dot never even fades. Any ideas/suggestions on what the issue could be and why we're not getting a good testing result for CYA?

Thanks!
